of Wells, in the county of Ottawa and State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Check-Book Holders, of which the following is a specilication. One of the principalobjects of my invention is to provide an improved checkbook holder of convenient size for the pocket, adapted to hold and protect a pad of Vchecks in such manner as to eliminate the fold in so that the checks will always'be straiglitand smooth and af ford a good writing surface.

Another object is to provide an improved check book holderof the ab will be extremely simple,

durable,- eficient in operation,

and inexpensive to manufacture. Still another object is to provide a check readily operated means to hold the same in closed position. Y

The check pad, indicated generally at 8, is secured at the stub end to the folded-over pair of staples 9. The extremity of the foldedfover portion 7 is left free and unconnected with the back, whereby to facilitate the clenching of the staples 9.

The construction shown in Figs. f1, 5, 8, and 9 is similar to that already described, with the exception of the means for fasten: ing the check pad to the cover. In the embodiment shown in these figures, the folded.- over portion 7 is provided adjacent its free end with a transversely arranged slot 12 adapted to detachably receive the tongue portion 13 of a tab on which the check pad is mounted. The check pad is connected by means of staples 14C With the head portion 15 of the tab, as indicated in Fig. 5, said head portion 15 extending across the pad at the stub end thereof for suitably supportingY said pad. When the pad is `mounted on the cover, the tongue 13 is in.- serted through the slot 12 inthe manner indicated in Figs. S and 9, so that the tongue Will engage between the folded-over portion a and the back 5vall to be held in place by frictional engagement between these members.

In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the foldedbver portion 7b of the cover, and the back portion 5U are not glued together, as in the other embodiment of the invention, but are left unconnected except for the single staple 15 Which secures the check pad in place, this staple being extended through 'the check pad, folded-over portion 7*? and back 5", and clenchedV against the outer side ef the pad, as indicated in the drawing. By leaving the bacl; and the folded-over portion thus unconnected, the retaining band 10) may be slid back and forth, at the Will of the user, for being positioned at any desired point along theleaf 6D Within the range of movement of the band, for retaining'the book in closed position.

In Fig. 7 the arrangement is the same as set out in Figs. l to 3 inclusive, with the exception that the staples, indicated in Fig. 7 at 9, extend clear through the back portion 5 and are clenched against the outer surface of the check pad, for securely connecting the parts and holding them rigidly together.

In the forms of check books shown in Figs. 10 to 1st inclusive, the back portion of the book cover does not have an extended folded-over portion which operates to re tain the strap. The form shown 4in Figs. Y

10 and 11 is one in which the check pad is folded along the line of perforations and is secured to the back by means of staples 9 and the stub end of the pad is provided With a short fly-leaf 20 folded back to cover the staples and to give the pad a finished appearance. This arrangement does away with the binding with which the studs of the check pads are usually finished.

Such a check book as l have provided iS exceptionally neat and pear'ance, is of a convenient size te readily lit in ones pocket, presents the ex.- tremely desirable advantage of keeping the checks in a flat, uncreased condition,

It is obvious that in the forms described where the retaining band is adjustable a nonelastic member may be utilized, and by shifting the same toward the free end of the leaf excessive bending of the latter may be avoided in opening the cover.

Although I have described the preferred embodiments of my invention, to make such changes in the construction, combination, and arrangement of' parts thereof, as do not ndepart from the spirit of the invention and thescope of the appended claims. i

In a check bookholder, the combina,- tion of a cover formed of aV single strip of `flexible material and comprising aback, a leaf forming a centinuation of one end of the back and folded upon the back along a line intermediate lthe ends of the strip, and a folded: over portion normally folded against the back along a line adjacent the opposite end of the back, said folded-over portion extending between the bacl and the said lea-f; means upon said. folded=over portion to hold a check pad, and a retaining band beneath which the leaf is adapted to be detachabl'y engaged for keeping the book in closed position, said band having one side confined between the back and the said folded-over portion.
