My improvements are particularly well adapted for memorandum, note, and music books,- or any other kind of books Where it may be desirable to remove from the cover the body of the book to preserve it for future reference, and supply a new book, or to add new sheets, as in case of music, 860.

Figure 1 shows the open cover with the sheets of the book attached, which is of ordinary construction, having across its center a metallic spring, as at a, either embedded in the cover or fastened down and held there by a stripof leather, 1) I), or other suitable material passing across it, and over a sufficient length of the wings or flaps of the cover.

' Fig. 2 shows the metallic piece so formed that while its under portion 0 (being soldered on a flat piece of metal) terminatesin a stand up hook. d, and is held firmly down to the cover, as at b b, its other part or portion 6, which is round, is curved, as at f, and then turned over the book or papers, and caught and held by the stand-up hook at d. The elasticity of this upper portion of the metallic binder being forced down and held at d, binds the book, sheets, or leavestight and secure, and can easily be loosened to remove the book, sheets, or leaves, or add to them or replace them with another blankor unwritten book, the same cover answering for any amount of books,

sheets, or leaves. The cover g is provided with a holding-strip, b, under which is inserted the spring-clamp, whereby the sheets are secured to the cover.

'Fig. 3 shows the cover spread open containing a book Without having the metallic binder, Fig. 2. To form a memorandum or note book best suited to my invention, take, say, a quire of duodecimo paper, open and spread it out at its full length to suit length and breadth of open cover; then take two quires,- m m, of same kind of paper unopened, and place each apart on top of the open paper, back toback, as seen at 0 and 0, their backs let't'sufficie-ntly apart to admit of the metallic binder, Fig. 2, between them. These are held together in their proper place by one or more suitable fasteners in each, as shown atp p p p, and can .be covered, together with the hollow or groove formed between the backs of the paper by a strip of linen pasted over all, as at r r. The edges may be then trimmed by bookbinder, and the entire book is finished ready to use.

I claim- 1. In a memorandumbook, the combination of open sheets n, the folded sheets m m, the springrbinder herein described, and the cover 9, all substantially as specified.

2. In a memorandum-book, the combination of the open sheets 72. and the folded sheets m m, secured upon each side thereof, all substantially as specified.
