To all whom it may concemg Be it known that I, Janos M. ALTER, a citizen of Russia, residing at New York city borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Albums, of which the follow- 0 ing is a specification.

This invention relates to the construction to of loose leaf binders or books, which though adapted for general business uses are designed especially for the holding of talking machine record disks.

Among the objects of the invention is to improve the construction of an album of the character indicated with respect to the simplification of the back, making a cheaper and stronger construction than has heretofore been made.

Another object of the invention is to improve the hinge construction both as to simplification of design and material and also as todurability.

A still further object is to improve the construction of the leaves or envelopes and the manner of securing them detachably in the back of the book.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed .or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a general perspective view indicating my improved album laid open.

Fig. 2 is a detailview of the metal piece of the back and the flexible hinges secured thereto ready for assemblage.

Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of the back and especially indicating the construction and operation of the pins.

Referring now more specifically to the drawings I show my improvement as being embodied in an album having a back 10, two" still or board covers 11, and a series of leaves indicated herein as consisting of envelopes 12 for holding record The principal feature of novelty of the backlO is a metal piece 10' made preferably from a single strip of sheet metal whose edges 13 are each bent upon itself at 14, the extreme edge portion 15 ofwhich lies substantially fiat adjacent to the outer surface of the next adjacent strip 16. The-two edge portions 13 lie in substantially parallel planes and embrace between them the hinge portions 12 of the envelopes. The main middle portion of the metal channel member 10 is rounded as usual and is reinforced by any suitable number and arrangement of transverse grooves 17 formed therein... The two edge portions 13 furthermore are punched with aligned holes 18, there being preferably three pairs of such holes for a like number of fasteners for the leaves or envelopes.

The hinges, constituting another important feature of novelty of this construction, comprise relatively narrow strips of tough flexible material 19, one edge of each being inserted between the portions 15 and 16 of each edge 13 and there securely fastened by any suitable means including the crimpin of such edge portions firmly together an by the formation of transverse creases or grooves in any suitable number or arrangement as indicated 'at 20 formed directly in' or through the twocooperating parts of the edge of the back. The opposite edge portion of each' hinge is fastened to the adjacent cover 11 in any usual or approved manner, a finishing strip of paper or the like being applied thereover as shown at 21.

The back is provided with a finishing strip 10 cemented as at 10 on the outside surface of the metal strip 10.

Each envelope 12 has a closed bottom 22 while the hinge portion 12 thereof is made up of three plies 23, 24, and 25, all secured rigidly together and through which are formed a suitable number of holes preferably reinforced with eyelets 26. The envelope for flexibility is preferably scored at 27 coincident with the folding and formation of the hinge portion.

Variousfastening means may be emo ed' for-securing the envelopes to the bee, ut for this purpose I show and prefer to use a series of pins 28 each consistln of a tight coil of wire the length of whic coincides with the s ace between the edge portions 13 of the bac and along which the eyelets 26 of the envelopes are adapted to slide. For securing the pins in place a pair of'short screws 29 are employed, the same being passed inward through the holes 18 formed in the back flanges 13, the heads of the screws lying flatly against'the outer portions 15 of said flanges While the threaded portions of the screws are designed to mate directly with the inner surface of the ends of the pin coil. Thus the ends of the pins are fixed firmly and rigidly in place in the flanges of the back but the middle or main portlon of each pin 28 is free to flex outward as suggested in dotted lines 28 in Fig. 3 when the book is open. This con struction is not only cheap but exceedingly neat and strong,.adapting the construction well for practical purposes as well as attractive appearance.

I claim: 1. The herein describedbook construction comprising a channel-shaped metal back having spaced parallel edges, a series of leaves having hinge portions located between said edge portions of the back, a pair of flexible hinge strips having their edges secured to said e e portions of the back, and fasteners for t e leaves passing through said hinge strips, the metal back edges, and

the leaves.

2. In a book construction, the combination of a back member of channel form made of rigid sheet material and having edge por: tions each folded upon itself, and a pair of flexible hinge strips having their edges gripped between thetfolded portions of the respective edges of the back, said back edges being crimped for locking the hinge portions.
