GOODRICH Q. LEWIS, 0F WHEATON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. MINER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PROCESS OF MAKING DRAFT-RIGGING PARTS.
Application filed May 21, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GooDRIoH Q. LEwIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheaton, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Processes of Making Draft-Rigging Parts, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. 7
My invention relates to a process of manufacturing a means for connecting the draw bar to the draft gear shell in railway car draft rigging.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple process of manfacturing a draw bar and draft gear shell connection.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bar. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of said bar with a T-head formed at one end thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of said bar with rivet holes formed therein. Fig. 4 is a side elevation partly in longitudinal section of a bar or bars joined to a draft gear shell. Fig. 5 is a side elevation partly in longitudinal section of a shell draw bar and the means for connecting the same.
My process consists of forming a T-head -6 at one end of a preferably flat bar 7 of suitable length, then providing rivet holes 8, 8 through the opposite end of said bar. After preparing a pair of bars in the manner above described the process further consists in spacing said bars apart a suitable distance and casting about the T-heads of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1915.
Serial No. 768,919.
said bars a hollow shell 9, the said shell preferably having in its forward end a pair of oppositely arranged outwardly extending shoulders 10, 10 within which the T-heads of the said bars are cast, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
The process further consists in placing a hollow head 11 on the free ends 12, 12 of said bars, and then riveting said head to the bars by rivets passing through the perfora tions 8, 8 in said bars and through top and bottom plates 13, '13 of the said hollow head. The top and bottom plates 13, 13 of said head are each preferably provided with longitudinal slots 14 within which the free ends of the said bars are received. The lateral plates 15, 15 of said head are preferably provided with the transverse slots 16, 16 to receive the draw bar key 17, which passes through said slots and through the draw bar 18, which is received within the hollow opening 19 of said head.
The herein described process of making draft rigging parts which consists in first providing a pair of bars each having an enlarged inner end, then casting upon the enlarged ends of said bars, a hollow shell with portions of the latter inclosing said enlarged ends, thereby permanently uniting the bars and shell together, and finally attaching the other ends of said bars to a yoke held.
