Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MINER, a cltizen of the United States residing at Chazy, in the county of Clinton and State York, have invented a certain new of which the following is full, clear, concise, and exact description,

reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in draw bar and yoke connections.

The main object of the invention is to provide a simple and relatively inexpensive detachable connection between a draw bar and yokeof the ordinary strap form and wherein the old straps may be reemployed, to thus effect a material saving for the users.

Another and more specific object of the invention is to provide a device of the type above indicated wherein the connection may be made between the yoke strap and draw bar without the necessity of a coupler key.

In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a part longitudinal section, part side elevation of a draw bar and yoke illustrating one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1. And Figs, 3 and 4 are perspective views of the strap and block employed with my arrangement: I

In said drawing, 10 denotes a standard draw bar having the usual butt provided with the rivet holes 1111 such as is ordinarily used with the old type of rivet yoke strap. The yoke is designated by the reference 12 and, as shown, is of the usual wrought iron strap form and having the perforations 13-13 therein for the rivets.

It is obvious that the yoke 12 may either be a new yoke strap or preferably an old yoke strap that has been formerly riveted to a draw bar.

The means for connecting the yoke and draw bar, as shown, consist of an inverted U shaped strap A, a block B, and key C. The strap or stirrup A consists of side walls 14 14 and upper horizontal connecting portion 15, the the sides of the draw bar, as is apparent. The cross portion 15 is provided on its under side withv a pair of depending integral lugs Iii-16 spaced apart the standard distance of the rivet holes ofthe draw bar, said lugs strap A straddling the yoke at 16 being of sufficient length to pass through the rivetholes 13 into the rivet holes 11 of the draw bar butt. The block B is adapted to fit betweenthe arms 14.14 of the strap A, said block B bemg provided with a pair of upstanding lugs 1717, similar to the lugs 16, and adapted to extend through the rivet holes 13 in the lower arm of the yokeand into the lower rivet holes 11 of the draw bar butt. On its under face, the block B is provided with a transverselyextending groove or channel 18 adapted to accommodate the transversely extending key G, the latter passing through suitably located slots 19-19 in the lower portions of the side arms 14. The key C may be held in place by any suitable means such as the cotter 20.

The parts are shown in assembled relation and in order to disconnect he draw bar, the key C is first withdrawn, then the block B dropped down so as in the upper yoke arm and to be disengaged from the yoke strap and draw bar butt, then the out disturbing the yoke or any of the parts therewithin and furthermore, my arrangement is adapted for use with draw bars whether the same are provided with coupler key slots or not. In addition to the foregoing, it is obvious that old yoke straps of the riveted type may be employed, thus saving the cost of new material for a yoke strap. The improved arrangement is also of great utility in the matter of repairs, since when the rivets of the old riveted. type of yoke and draw-bar connection shear, my improved locking means may be immediately applied without the necessity ofchanging the yoke strap or draw bar and without the necessity of using any special tools. I

Although I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come wlthm the scope of the claims appended hereto.

I claim: A,

1. In combination, a draw bar hfaving standardly located and spaced rivet holes therein, a yoke strap also having standardly located and spaced rivet holes therein, and means for detachably connecting the strap and draw bar including, elements extending from opposite directions through said holes of the strap and into said holes of the draw bar, said elements being releasably connected.

2. In combination, a draw bar, a yoke, the butt of the draw bar extending between the arms of the yoke, said arms and butt having alined holes, two members located on the outer faces of the ends of the yoke arms, one member straddling the draw bar and each having means extending through the adjacent alined holes of the yoke and into the holes of draw bar butt, and a transversely extending key located outside of the draw bar butt for holding said members in operhavingstandardly spaced ative position.

3. As an article 01. manufacture, a hood adapted to detachably connect a draw bar and a yoke strap having the usual rivet holes therein, said hood comprising, a U

shaped member adapted to straddle the yoke and draw bar when the latter are assembled, a block adapted'to form the fourth side of the hood and-when in position being located between the ends of said U-shaped member, means for locking said member and block together, and means penetrating said rivet holes in said draw bar and yoke strap held in operative position by said Ushaped member and block when the latter are assembled.

4. As an article of manufacture, a hood adapted to detachably connect a draw bar rivet holes therein, and a strap also having standardly spaced rivet holes therein, said hood comprising a U shaped member adapted to straddle the yoke and draw bar, a block,

- arranged to pass and means for locking said .member and block together, said member and block being each provided with oppositely arranged, inwardly extended lugs adapted to pass through the alined rivet holes of the strap and draw bar. I

5. In a draft rigging, means detachably connecting a draw bar and yoke having alined rivet holes, saidmeans comprising an inverted U shaped. member adapted to straddle the yoke and draw bar, the cross portion of the U. shaped member being provided with a pair of downwardly extended lugs through the alined rivet holes of the upper arm of the yoke and draw bar butt, a block having upwardly extended lugs adapted to extend through the alined rivet holes of the lower arm of the yoke and draw bar butt, and a key extending transversely beneath and engaging said block,

.which is provided with standardly spaced rivet holes, a U shaped yoke having the ends of the arms thereof extending over the top and bottom faces of the draw bar butt, said ends of the arms being provided with standardly spaced rivet holes, a U shaped plate extending across the top arm of the yoke and downwardly past the sides of the draw bar butt, the top portion of said U shaped plate being provided on its inner face with a pair of lugs arranged to extend through the standardly spaced rivet holes of the upper yoke arm and the draw bar butt, a block having a pair of upwardly extending lugs arranged to pass through the standardly spaced rivet holes of the lower arm of the yoke and draw bar butt, and a cross key extending beneath said block and mounted in slots in the lower ends of the side arms of said U shaped plate, said key and block begitudinal movement therebetween.

8. In combination, a draw bar the butt of which is provided with standardly arranged rivet holes, a yoke the arms of which are provided with standardly arranged rivet receiving holes, and devices for detachably uniting said draw bar and yoke, said devices including an upper member'having a pair of downwardly extending, relatively short lugs arranged to pass through the rivet holes of one arm of the yoke and into .the rivet holes of the draw bar butt, a second member having a pair of upwardly extending relatively short lugs adapted to pass through the rivet holes of the other yoke ing assembled so as to prevent relative lon-' arm and, into the rivet holes of the draw bar WILLIAM vH.
