FORGED DRAWBAR YOKE.
Application filed Au i st aisu. Serial No. 7313149.
To all whom it may concern." 7 I Be it known that I, SOREN' HANssoN, a subject of the King of Norway, and a resident of Butler, in the .county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Forged Drawbar Yokes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to draw bar yokes particularly applicable to railway cars and the like.
One object of my invention is to provide a yoke that may be made entirely from forgings, requiring a minimum amount of material, few parts, and which is adapted for key connection to the present standard types of draw bars.
Another object of my invention is to simplify and improve generally the struo: ture of devices of the character referred to.
One form which my invention may take is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a plan View of a portion of a draw bar yoke embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a view, partially in elevation and partially in section, of the device of Fig. 1'; Fig. 3 is a view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a view taken on the line 4.4: of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is an elevational View of one of the members from which the, yoke head is formed.
The structure comprises a loop member 6 of substantially U-form having top and bottom portions 7 that are enlarged and thickened at their outer ends in the manner shown in Fig. 1, to provide greater strength at those points.
7 The yoke head is composed of two side sections 8 and 9,'each having a slot 10 formed therein for the reception of a coupler key for connecting the shank of a draw bar (not shown) to the yoke.
Each of the yoke head members 8 and 9 is provided with a pair of bosses orlugs 11 that extend through openings 12 formed in the members 7 and which are adapted to be upset as shown in Figs. 1 and 4:, for rigidly securing the members 8 and 9 to the loop member 6.
As a further means of strengthening the structure, I forge the lugs 11 with oflset portions, as indicated by the :line 13 in Fig. 1. The offset portions of the members 8 and 9 cooperate toprevent relative movement betweenthese members in a direction longitudinal of the loop member 6, thus addopenings 12 in the members 7 will be formed thereafter, by drop forging or otherwise.
It will be apparent that various changes in details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the accompanying claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A. yoke for draft rigging and the like, comprising a body portion having side members, and a head portion composed of two sections each fastened to said side members and having interlocking relation with the other.
2. A yoke for draft rigging and the like, comprising a U-shaped loop member and a plurality of head sections, each of which is secured to said loop member and has interlocking engagement with an adjacent head section to prevent relative longitudinal movement of said head sections.
bers, a pair of head members disposed between said side members, and extensions on said head members protruding through said perforations, the said lugs of the respective head members being provided with interengaging portions to prevent relative longitudinal movement thereof. 7 .5. A. yoke for draft rigging and the like,
comprising a pan of perforated side members, a pair'of head members disposed between said side members and each provided with lugs extending through said perfora tions, and interengaging offset portions formed in opposing surfaces of said lugs to prevent relative movement of said head members, the outer ends of said lugs being upset to engage the outer surfaces of said side members to prevent lateral movement thereof.
6. A yoke for draft rigging and the like, comprising a body portion having spaced side members, each provided with a perfora- 10 tion, a head portion composed of two sections disposed between said side members, and lugs at opposite sides of each of said sections extending through said perforations, the lugs at each side of the respective 15 sections being disposed in abutting relation SOREN HANSSON.
