To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, LAWRENCE R. CoM- eTooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ardmore, in the county of Carter and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plumb-Bobs, of which the following is a specifica-tion.
This invention relates to plumb' bobs, the primary object being to provide a device of this character which is constructed in sections whereby the required size of plumb bob maybe made up to meet the varying conditions of usage.
A further object is to provide a sectional plumb bob which is constructed of metal throughout and -whose sections are adapted to be loaded with mercury and to be' united by means of threaded connections, means being provided for protecting the threads of the different sections while not in use, whereby the device is rendered extremely durable and etiicientitor use by bricklayers, carpenters, or the like.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement oi' parte, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accom; panying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, showing the main body section employed; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the same; Fig. 34 is a side elevation or' the device when the auxiliary body alone is employed; Fig. i is a longitudinal sectional View taken through Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a side .el-eration of the device as extended by connecting the auxiliary body section with the main budy section; Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view through the main body section, when not in use, showing the closure plug for its threaded socket applied thereto; and, Fig. 8 is a similar view taken through the auxiliary section when not in use.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the main body section of the plumb bob, which is constructed of some suitable metal to aiord the necessary weight, and which is cylindrical in shape vand hollow with its lower end closed. The lower end of the section 1 is provided with a conical point I. which is preferably equal in length to the diameter of the body. This body section is provided in its upper end with a threaded specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept5 i5,
Application filed March 1d, 191e. Serial to. Mabel.
ltfhen the auxiliary body section alone used in the composition of a plumb bob, it is necessary to protect the screw threads upon its lower end against injury, for the device is ordinarily subjected to rough usage. rl`here'fore, a miurled protective sleeve 13, which is internally screw threaded, is adapted to be fitted onto the said lower end of the section 5 and is retained thereon when this section is not in use. Closure plugs 14 and 15 are also adapted 'to be threaded into the sockets 3 and 12 of the body sections l and 5 respectively to retain a load of mercury 16 in each section, whereby each section is rendered of maximum weight for its length.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it should be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains that l have provided a simply constructed plumb bob which may be stored in lll@ a small amount of space, when not in use,l
owing to its sectional construction, and Whose sections may be employed to afford a plumb bob of the required size for each operation.
What is claimed is:
1. A plumb bob comprising a plurality of cylindrical sections, each having its lower end pointed and being provided in its upper end with a threaded socket, the lower end portion of one section being reduced and externally threaded for reception within the socket of the other section, and a line/- attaching, suspension cap having a threaded lower end adapted to be engaged within the socket of either body section.
2. A plumb bob comprising a plurality of cylindrical sections, each'having its lower end pointed and being provided in its upper end with a threaded socket, the lower end portion of one section being reduced and externally threaded for reception within the socket of the other section, a line-attaching, suspension cap having a threaded lower end adapted to be engaged within the socket of either` body Section, and-Jani linternally threaded protective sleeve adapted to be fitted` onto the lower reduced end of the' and threaded interioriy to providea socket,`
the lower end portion of one section being reduced and externally threaded for reception within the socket of the other section, a line-attaching, suspension cap having a threaded lower end adapted to be engaged within'the socket of either body section, and a closure plug adapted to be threaded into the socket of either body section, each section being adapted to receive a load of heavy substance.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
