HENRY MURRAY, or JERS Y CITY, new JERSEY.
COMBINATION PLUMBTIiI N E Ann LEVEL.
Application filed nine v4,
Thisinvention relates generally to plumblines and levels, and has more particular reference to a novel type of combination plumb-bob and level.
The invention has for an object the provision of an improved plumb-bob and level which will consist of an integral unit, facilitating use for either a plumb-bob, or level, andat the same time eliminating possible injury of the level, due to rough handling or dropping of the plumb-bob.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing,
and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention device.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same, with a portion broken away disclosing the interior parts.
Fig. 3 is a similar view as that shown in Fig. 2, but of a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of a further modified form of the invention, with a portion broken away disclosing the interior parts.
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
The reference numeral 10 indicates a portion of the plumb-line attached to the plumbbob 11-, as at 12. The plumb-bob is formed with a central portion 13, of any desirable shape, an integral front pointed portion 14, and a rear portion 15, secured to the central portion 13, by means of a projection 15 from the member 15, engaging an aperture 16 in the member-13. The member 13 is formed with agroove 13, and a level 17 of customary construction is housed in the I member 13 so as to be readable from the groove 13. Preferably cement 18 is used to fasten the level 17 in the proper position.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 3, the level 17 is made of glass, and has a surrounding casing 19 of rubber, or similar shock absorbing material. Should the plumb-bob he accidentally dropped, danger of the level 17. breaking is eliminated, due to the casing 19.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5,
1926. Serial No. 113,668.
a slidable member 20 isengaged to the central member 13, and slidably held by the depending portions 21. A door 22 to close the groove 18*, is pivotally secured to the slidable member 20, as at 23. The door 22 is formed with a cam face 22*, engaging the face of the groove 13 so that upon sliding the member 20 rearwards, the door 22 is wedged open, allowing the level 17 to be used. The door 22 is normally urged to closed position by the action of spring 24 acting between members 20 and 22. When the plumb-bob is used, the door 22 in its closed position, acts to perfectly balance the ho Vhile I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein maybe made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or other-- wise altering the arrangement of the cone PATENT lop-me. j
lated parts without departing-from the spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is l. A level of the class described comprising a body portion of hexagonal cross-section having a central longitudinal opening therein extending from one end thereof and terminating in spaced relation to the other end thereof, a level vial adapted to be inserted in said opening through the first men tioned end of said body member, a plug comprising a projection having an opening therein for receiving a cord to adapt said level to be used as a plumb bob, said plug being adapted to be inserted in the outer end of said central longitudinal opening after insertion of said level vial for retaining said vial in a proper position, said body portion having a recess therein formed by the removal of a semi-cylindrical section thereof for permitting observation of said vial, a
hinge mounted on said body portion adjacent iection having an opening therein for receiving a cord to adapt said level to be employed as a plumb bob, disposed in the end of said opening adapted to retain said vial therein, a pointed projection on the other end of said level, said body portion having an outer recess therein for permitting observation of said level vial, and a pivotally mounted lug adapted tobe disposed in said recess for protecting said level vial, the outer surface of said lug being adapted to conform with the surfaces of the body portion of said recess in flush relation thereto and the material of said lug being of suitable mass to balance said level body for causing the center of mass ofsaid'level to fall in a straight line HENRY MURRAY.
