CQI/IBIN'ED LOCK AND KNOCKER.
To all whom it may, concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. C. EDEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of lvashington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Combined Locks and Knockers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will on able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combined locks The knocker is mounted on a member which also carries the sleeve.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the device in front elevation; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation; Fig. 3 is a detail of the locking mechanism; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the knocker and of the lock onthe inner side of the door; *ig. o is a fragmentary view in elevation of a portion of the lock with one plate removed as it is seen by looking toward the left in Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, but with the roll-back removed; Fig. 7 is a detail of the member designed to lock the latch from the inner side of the door; Fig. 8 is a detail of a slotted sleeve for receiving a device for locking the mechanism from the inner side only; Fig. 9 is a detail partly in section showing the device in which the locking cylinder is mounted.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates the escutcheon plate of the knocker 12, the latter being pivoted at to the trun nions l6 rigidly mounted on or forming part of the casing 17 which receives the operating mechanism described below. The casing 17 is rigidly connected with plate 10 and within this casing is mounted a sleeve 18 having a slotted portion 19 toward the front end. The locking cylinder 19 is mounted within a cylindrical portion 20 carried by an upstanding member 21 projecting through the aforesaid slotand carrying a thumb-piece 22 by means of which sleeve 18 is operated A when the lock is released. Sleeve 18 controls Specification of Letters Patent.

the latch member 23. In order to effect the control of the latch by means of sleeve 18 said sleeve is provided with a slot 24 which is engaged by a spline 25 on a sleeve 26 operating the roll-back members 27 and 28, the latter being rigidly secured to sleeve 26. Members 27 and 2S engage the forked portions of member 30 comprising the shank to which the latch 23 is secured. In order to permit the operation of the latch, a key is inserted within cylinder 19 of the lock, and this cylinder when rotated operates the square spindle engaging a square socket in cam 36. When this cam is turned to the dotted position shown in Fig. 6, it engages lug 37 of pivoted locking member 38, and
throws end portion 39 out of contact with lug 40 carried by shank 30. This releases shank 30 and permits the operation thereof by, means of the roll-backs or by means of cam 36, and especially the end 41 thereof. Pivoted locking member 38 may also be operated from the inner side of the door by means of thumb member 42 carrying on its inner end a lug 43 engaging a notched portion 44 of member 38. The lower end- 45 of member 38 engages a flat spring 46 mounted on one'of the plate members of the lock and holds member 38 in the position in which it has been placed or thrown by the devices above described.
The pin tumblers of the locking cylinder are indicated by 14, in Fig. 1. Pins 35 permitof the operation of shaft 35 by the locking cylinder. The anvil member 9 is located in the usual position, and a spacing member 47 for the plates of the lock is shown aeiacent screw socket 48.
In order to lock the mechanism from the inner side of the door only, sleeve 18 is provided with a rigidly mounted collar having a slot 56 therein, and this slot is engaged by tongue 57 of slide or bolt 58 mounted in a guiding device 58 on the inner side of the plate 10. Member 58' is provided with an aperture 59 for an eccentric 60 carried by pin 61. The pin may be arranged for operation by a thumb member from the inner side of the door, A knob for the inner side may be carried by spindle 50 rigidly connected with a roll-back device, previously mentioned.
It will be understood that when members and 57 are engaged, latch 23 (acting as a night latch), can not be operated by thumb 1Q device and the rotary mcn'iber, said rotary member carrying the locking cylinder such mounting means 001111 isinga tulimlar member haying oppositely located lugs and an open ended longitudinal slot at one end he- 15 tween the lugs, permit-mg access to the rotary member.
2. In in device or the class described, a bolt, a latch moi -ber carried tiereby, mechanism including :1 rotary device for oper- 20 uting the belt, a locking: cylinder within the rotary device, means for operating the rotary device when released, and means for mounting the latter and for mounting a pivoted member such mounting; means com- 25 prising a tubular member having oppositely located lugs and an open ended longitudinal slot at one end between the lugs, pen mitting access to the rotary member.
3. In a device of the class described, a
bolt, a latch member carried thereby, mechanism including a roll-back for operating the bolt, a sleeve connected with the rollback, means including a slotted sleeve for operating the sleeve first mentioned, a loclzing cylinder within the slotted sleeve, a
thumb member immediately above the locking cylinder, projecting through the slotted sleeve at an angle to its main axis and arranged for rotating the slotted sleeve, a bolt locking device, and means for operating the latter from the locking cylinder.
In a device of the class described, a bolt means including a slotted rotary device operating the bolt, a thumb member for operating the rotary device, a tubular member for mounting the rotary membeiytrunnions carried by the tubular member, a pivoted. ring-lil e member connected with the trvnnions said member last mentioned heri 2. portion cut away to permit of such ccni'lection and the thumb member being o ted adjacent to the cut-away portion, a locking cylinder within the slotted rotary device, and means connected with the cylinder for retaining the bolt against operation by the device last'mentioned.
5, in combination with a lrnoclrer and means including a plate and a sleeve for mounting the knocker, of a latch, means for operatin a the latch by the rotation of said :35 ere, locking; means concentric with the leeve, and an independent locking device r 1' the sleeve mounted on the plate on the side opposite to that on which the knockeris located.
in testimony whereof I my signature in presence ol. two witnesses.
