BOLT-OPERATING zonvrcn.
i Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 11L, 191%..
Applicationfiled May 31, 1917. Serial No. 171,859.
To all whom it may-concern.-
Be it known that 1, PETER GRznoH, a subject of the Czar of Russia, resident of Dunellen, county of Middlesex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to improvements in bolt operating devices, and particularly to those which are operated without the use of keys.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described capable oi'fbeing used in connection with an ordinary door and which may be operated on either side thereof without the aid of a key or other appliance whatever.
A further object of the invention is to.
provide means combined with the device whereby the door is effectually secured at.
the top and bottom thereof, as well as at the front, and further, to provide means which are permutative in their character, but which in themselves do not effect a locking or unlocking of the bolt.
These and other similar objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, form ing a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a View showing a fractional part of a door together with its casing, and the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevational view of the device, parts being broken away, and the bolt being shown in an engaged or operative position.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same, the iarts being shown in an unlocked or disengaged position.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fraginental detailed view showing a portion of the operating disk.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the same, includ ing the knob and support, and
Fig. 7 is a fragmental side view of the permutative locking disks.
The device comprises a rigid metallic casing 10, substantially rectangular in shape and adapted to be attached to the framework of a door by bolts 11, passing through apertures at its corners, a keeper 12 being secured to the jamb of the door as is usual.
Slidably engaged within the casing is a bolt element 14 having a head 15 at one end provided with a plurality of projections 16,
engageable with similar openings 17 formed within the keeper 12.
At the opposite end of the bolt 14 is an extension 18 having beveled side walls 19 and cylindrical central guide element 20 passing through the rear of the casing 10.
Formed with the bolt 14 in one of the edges thereof, is a plurality of teeth acting in the manner of a rack 22, the rack being engageable by teeth on the pinion 23, the pinion being mounted upon a shaft 24, the extending ends of which are provided with operating knobs 25 which may be actuated from either side of the door.
Another square shaft 28 passes through the casing and also. the door, provided with similar knobs 30, and mounted upon the square shaft 9 8, is a lever 32, having formed at its inner extending end a pair of jaws 33 and containing between them a recess 34: adapted to engage with the squared shaft 24 when brought into connection with the same by actuating the knob.
The opposite end 35 of the lever 32 is engageable within the recess 36 formed at the extreme end of a lever 37, pivoted upon a squared shaft 38, which, like the other shafts, are mounted transversely in the lock and pass through the casing, the shaft being provided with operating knobs 40.
The lever 37 has at its end 39, opposite the recess 36, a hook-like, thickened projection 41, a part of the same being receivable within the recess 42 formed in the disk 43, the same being formed with a sleeve 44, engaged with an extending hub 45, and mounted upon a shaft 48 provided with actuating knobs 50 at each end, so that when rotary motion is transmitted through the knobs, the squared shaft 48 is rotated.
An outer disk 57 having a recess 58 is mounted on the shaft 48 and secured relatively to the disk 43 by a key 59 set in the shaft, the key being engageable in any of the slots 65 formed in the disk in such 1nanner that by removing one of the knobs 50 the disk 57 can be turned and again secured in either of several positions, thereby affording a wide variety of permutations controllable by the dial on the face of the knobs 50. hub 45, and index 52.
The several parts are held in operative position by means of a bracket having a *relation to the dial 45,bringing the. slot 58 dial 52 and held by the end elements 53 to the casing 10, an interior offset enlargement 55 being formed in the lock casing and prm vided with an open slot 56 through which the lever end 39 passes, so that the hook 41 will register With the recesses 42 and 58.
Near the inner end of the lock are oppositely formed projections 6 0 in Which are slidably mounted plungers 61, the same being pressed inwardly by means oi the springs ,62, surrounding thes'tems63 Which engagein an obvious manner with bolts at the top. and bottom of the door, the bolts being pushed outwardly when the main bolt 1% isin a locked position by, means of the inclined faces 19 ofthe enlargementlS, and are returned by meansof the springs 63 when the bolt 14- is in an unlocked position. ,In operation, it may be presumed that the parts are as shown in Fig. 2, that is, in alockedpositiomand it is desired tonnlook thesame. The dialhub 41:5 is first rotated into known relation with, the index 52, causing. the ,slot 42 to register itlrthe hook ll, after Whichthe knob 50 ,is turned with intoalinement with the slot 42,avhereupon the point ll ill enterinto the recesses upon actuation of the knob 4E0, releasing the lever 32,50, that by actuatingthe knobi30, the squared shaft 2e may be turned by theknob 2,5,1 operating the pinion and retracting the ho t.
From the foregoing it Will be seen that an effective locking device is provided which is operated Without the use of keys, but merely by the manipulation of certain eX- tending knobs.
I claim 1. In a bolt operating device, the, combination With a casing, a bolt slidable therein, a plurality of projections formed With said bolt said projections being separately engageable ithin a keeper, a pair of opp'o sitely disposed plungers at the rear ofsaid casing adapted to engage With the bottom and top ofthe door, means combined with the bolt for actuating said plungers, means for actuating said bolt knobs arranged on said casing, and a plurality of levers operated by said knobs Whereby the bolt actuating mechanism may be engaged or released.
2. In bolt operating mechanism, the combination With a casing, a bolt slidable therein, a rack formed upon one edge of said bolt, a pinionengageable with said rack, a square shaft mounted transversely in said casing upon which said pinion is rigidly mounted, a lever engageable with said squared shaft, means for operating said lever, a second lever for holding the first lever in a locked position and means for actuating said levers independently.
In testimony whereof I have atfixed my signature.
PETER GRZECH.
