Description

B. DE P. LEMAN.
COMBINATION GARMENT. APPLICATION FILED 001:31, 1912.
Patented July 7, '1914.
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
BLANCHE DE PINNA. LEMAN, 0F WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK.
coMBINA'rIoiv-GAEMENT.
This invention relates to an improved union garment.
The object of the invention is to provide a union garment composed of a knit fabric body portion and a cloth or other inelastic fabric lower portion in the form of drawers. With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features `of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure l represents a front elevation of one form of this invention with the leg portions spread apart to show the connection; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the forni shown in Fig. l, taken from the lower end; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of another form of the invention with the division strip in inoperative position; Fig. 4 is a, perspective view taken from the lower end of the garment shown in Fig. 3 with the parts in o erative position; Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section of the forni shown in Figs. 3 and 4, with the parts in operative position.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. l and 2, the bodv portion l of the garment is shown in the forni of a knit undervest or shirt of what is known as three quarter length and to the lower edge of which are secured two straight pieces in the form of frills joined to form leg portions 2 and 3, being connected together at their upper edges for a short distance as shown at 2, said connected portion being arranged at a. point midway the width of the body portion l extending transversely between the front and rear portions thereof and formin a divided skirt, the lower edge of the knit tubular body portion being preferably stretched when the strips or frills forming the leg portions 2 and 3 are being stitched thereto to provide full leg portions or skirt members.
The upper edges of the leg portions 2 and Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 31, 1912. Serial No. 728,962.
Patented July 7, 1914.
3 are stitched together as shown at 2 in Fig. 2 and are of a sufficient length to properly space the front and back of the garment l and adapt it to comfortably fit the wearer. This arrangement provides a garment in which the knit portion is held down 'in proper position and large, cool drawer legs are provided which, being made of cotton or other non-elastic material, do not cling or adhere to the limbs of the wearer as do the leg portions of knit fabric garments.
In Vthe form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the leg or skirt portion is formed from acontinuous straight strip or frill of material 4: of greater length than the width of the body portion 1, twopieces being here shown stitched together to form this strip but .it is obvious it may be made from a single strip of material when convenient, and is stitched at its upper edge to the lower edge of said body portion forming a seam l, and
the upper edges of the projecting ends 5 and 6y of this strip which are preferablydisposed midway the width of the back of the garment are stitched together as shown at 5 and the terminals 5 and 6 of'said ends are also stitched together in a. plane at right angles to the upper edges. connected terminals of the ends 5 and 6 are provided at their upper ends with a fastening element preferably in the form of a buttondiole 7` which is adapted to engage a suitable button 8 arranged on the inner face of the ga rineut midway the width of the front ot' the garn'ient at the seam la, which joins the frill or strip 4 to the lower portion of .the body l, whereby the legs 9 and l0 0f the drawers are formed and the front and rear portions of the garment spaced .a suitable distance apart to produce a comfortable lit, and when the fastening elements are disengaged-the garment. may be easily washed and ironed.
While I have described my invention with more or less minuteness as regardsdetails and as being embodied in certain precise fornis,'1 do not desire to 'be limited thereto unduly any more than is pointed out in the claims. On the contrary, I contemplate all proper changes in form, construction and arrangement, the omission of immaterial elements and substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient.
lfVhat is` claimed is l 1. A combination, garment comprising a The adjacent upper edges between the front and rear of the body portion of the garment.
'2. A combination garment comprising a tubular knit fabric body portion, and drawer legsv of inelastic material secured to the loweredges thereof, each of said legs being composed of a strip of material of a length greater than one-half:` kof the width of the body portion of the garment at its lower edge, said leg portions being connected together at their adjacent upper edges at a point midway the width of the body portion. ,3. A' combination garment comprising a tubular knit fabric body portionhaving .a strip stitched at one edge to the lower edge of said arment, said strip being of greater length t an the circumference of the lower edge of the garment thereby providing projecting ends which are arranged intermediate of the width of the garment, said projecting ends being secured together at their -upper edges, and means for detachably connecting the terminals of said connected ends to the garment at a point opposite the side of the garment from which they project.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set mv hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
