To all whom it may concern:

B it known that I, HERBERT W. OLMSTED, a citizen of the United States, residing in Rochester, county of Monroe, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Memorandum-Files; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.

My present invention relates to filing devices and more particularly to that class thereof which is adapted for the reception of memoranda upon cards arranged in chronological order, and has for its particular object to provide certain unique features of construction, whereby the making and filing of memoranda may be facilitated.

To these and other ends the invention consists in certain new and useful improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a memorandum file constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention, the hinged front thereof being shown in open position; Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional View thereof; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line aa of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line bb of Fig. 3.

Similar reference numerals in the several figures indicate the same parts.

A file constructed in accordance with my invention embodies a container having side, back and bottom walls, normally closed by a movable frontv wall, and in the present instance the bottom is constituted by a base 1, provided with downwardly rounding edges 2, and a plurality of feet 3, bent inwardly at the corners of the base, said feet having pads 4: of felt or other elastic material secured thereto to prevent the possibility of scratching a polished surface upon which the file may rest.

The side walls 5, and rear wall 6 of the container are formed of a single piece of sheet material, the rear wall, being preferably inclined rearwardly as shown in Fig. 2, so that a stack of cards may lean in an inclined position against said wall, and the side and rear walls are secured to the bottom by projections 7 on their lower edges, which extend through apertures in the bottom and are then flattened down. The open front of the container is normally closed by a door 8 which when in closed position is inclined rearwardly for the purpos of tilt ing the stack of cards to rest against the rear wall 6, so that when the door is opened the front card is in a slanting position most convenient for inspection.

The door 8, is hinged to swing about an axis near its lower edge and is held in closed position by retaining means consisting of projections 9 on side flanges 10, struck up from the door 8, the projections engaging in depressions 11 in the side walls 5. The door is adapted to swing downwardly to a substantial horizontal position and carries a writing'pad 12, secured in place by a pin 13 on the inner surface of the front, engaging a perforation in the back sheet of the pad. Swinging movement of the pad on the pin 13 is prevented by the side flanges 10 on the door 8 and a flange 10 at the lower edge of the door which latter also offers a moderately wide stop shoulder for limiting the outward motion of the bottom edges of the cards. I

In order to prevent the cards from falling outwardly when the front 8 is opened, witlr out concealing in any way inscriptions on the outer card and yet permit a portion of the cards to be tilted forwardly for the purpose of inspecting a card in the interior of the stack, 1 provide a support against which th front card may lean. This support preferably extends across the container at a point about midway of the length of the cards and occupies a position within the container when the door is closed, but is yieldingly movable forwardly when the door is opened and in the present embodiment consists of a loop of wire having a transversely extending portion 1 1, downwardly extending side portions 15, and for wardly extending attaching portions 16 for securing the support in position, the attachment being preferably accomplished by striking up portions 17 from the bottom 1, and bending them around the attaching portions. The free ends of the wire are bent upwardly and laterally as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, the lateral portions 18 extending through the flanges 10, on the front 8 to provide journal portions about which the front may swing and also through the side walls 2 in which they may be secured by upsetting or inany desired manner.
