BOOK-HOLDER. I
Application filed October 30, 1912.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it wiay concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention subject of this application is an improved device for supporting books, magazines or newspapers in an upright and open position so that they may be read or referred to by a person engaged in writing, eating or otherwise, and consists in a box or casing provided with pivotal arms or blades serving as supports, and means for holding the book or paper, all combined and arranged in the manner hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the drawing hereto annexed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved book holder exhibiting all of its accessory parts. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same with said parts adjusted for receiving and supporting an open book. Fig. 8 is a cross sectional view of the device showing the parts adjusted for supporting a newspaper or thin periodical. Fig. 4 is an end view of the device in a closed condition. Fig. 5 is a front view in elevation and part section, and Fig. 6 a plan view of the under side of the device.
The device comprises an oblong box or casing A, preferably of sheet metal suitably ornamented and provided with a hinged lid or cover B, and feet V, with cork or rubber washers D set therein. The lid B when fully opened assumes a .slightly inclined position as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and at its middle point contains a rounded bulge or recess E to receive the back of a hook and the forward side of the box is formed with a projection F of corresponding shape in order to completely close the box when the lid is down. To the under side of the casing A are pivoted two arms or blades G, G, provided with cork or rubber tipped feet at their ends, and adapted to be turned as shown in the several figures to afford a wide base for supporting the device when in use. Similar arms H, H, are also fitted, preferably in pairs, to the inner or under side of the lid B, and are adapted to be turned or adjusted as may be most convenient to provide a back or rear support for a book or periodical. To the inner face of the rear wall of the casing H two shorter arms J, J, are pivoted, and these are adapted to be turned into an up right position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, to engage and hold the lower edge of a newspaper or relatively thin periodical. Similar arms K, K, are pivoted to the inner face of the front wall of the casing A to serve the same oflice for a book or relatively thick publication, all of the blades or arms being secured to the casing by suitable pivot screws or rivets and intermediate spring washers as L, in order to prevent too free movement and displacement when in use.
The parts described may be all folded in the box when so desired and the latter closed, thus reducing the device to the smallest possible compass, while still providing spgace for small articles of stationary or the li e.
What I claim is:
1. A book holder comprising a box or casing having arms or blades pivoted to its under side to constitute base supports, blades or arms pivoted to the inner or under side of its hinged lid, to constitute a back support for a book or periodical, and arms or blades pivoted to the inner faces of its front and rear walls to constitute front supports for books or periodicals, all of said arms being adapted to be folded within and under the box as set forth.
2. A book holder comprising, a box or casing provided with a hinged lid or cover having a curved recess to accommodate the back of an opened book, base supports or arms pivoted to the bottom of the box, rack supports pivoted to the under side of the hinged lid, and front supports pivoted to the inner faces of the front and rear walls, substantially as set forth.
3. A book holder comprising a box or casing, a lid hinged thereto and adapted when fully opened to occupy a slightly inclined position, base supports pivoted to the under side of the box, back supports pivoted In testimony whereof I affix my signature to the inner or under side of the lid, and in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
front supports pivoted to the inner faces HENRY ELLSWORTH WOOD. of the front and rear Walls of the box, all Witnesses:
of said supports being adapted to fold into E. SEGERs'rROM,
and under the box, as set forth. A. M. CAMPBELL.
