To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOI-IN HENRY PAUL HANEKLAUS, a citizen of Germany, residing at Ia-lmer, in the county of `Pocahontas and State of Iowa, have invented vcertain new and useful Improvements in Decoy-Ships, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a class of target ships or boat decoys, which are adapted to draw the fire from the enemys guns, misleading them as to the location of the real or material ship, and having for its object the provision of such a floating target or decoy which will adapt itself to the high seas, and at the same time, being so disposed and constructed as to collapse when desired, so that it may occupy as limited a space as possible when carried aboardship, or so that it will present little or no trouble when put in tow by a smaller ship. Having these and other objects of general utility in view, I have illustrated a practical embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a broad side elevation of my target with the picture canvas or screen in operative position; Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof; Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof, showing the extended position of the two pontoons, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional detail of the butt-joint connection employed,

taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3 as indicated by the arrows. l

My invention consists primarily in providing a floating screen or canvas 5, adapted to receive stereopticons projected thereon from the usual form of cinematograph or stereopticon machine, 25. The screen is carried upon a plurality of vertical masts or guides G, securely fastened to the deck 7 of a pontoon or float 8. In order to lend distance between the projecting machine and the screen, I prefer to mount the machine 25 upon a. suitable pedestal 9, carried by an auxiliary float 10, lying parallel to the float Specification of Letters Patent.

8, and connected thereto by means of a set of pivoted paralleling arms 1l-12, pivotally connected at 13 to the sleeve 14, to provide the common form of butt-joint (Fig. 4) therebetween. The opposite ends of the arms 11 are pivoted at 15-15 to the deck ofthe float 10, and the opposite ends of the arms 12 are pivoted at 1(5-16 upon the deck 7 of the float 8; keyed to these pintles 16 are beveled gears 17-17, meshing with gears 18-18 which are adapted tobe rotated upon their common shaft 19, by means of' a hand wheel 20.

It will now be apparent, that after the floats have been towedl to their position, the operator will turn the hand wheel 20, rotating the shaft 19 and causing the rotation of the meshing gears 17 and 18, and thus causing the arms 12 to pivot toward each other, forcing the float l() from the float 8, but keeping parallel thereto, thus giving the projecting machine distance to throw the picture of a battleship upon the screen 5, and draw the attention and fire from the enemys guns.

W'hat I claim is l. A decoy ship comprising a floating canvas and a projecting machine in conjunction therewith.

2. A decoy ship comprising two parallel disposed floats, a screen mounted upon one of said floats, and a projecting machine mounted upon the other of said floats and adapted to throw pictures upon said screen.

3. A decoy ship comprising'two floats, means for paralleling said floats and moving same with respect to one another, a screen mounted upon one of the said floats, and a projecting machine mounted upon the other of said floats.
