To uM whom it may concern Be it knovvn that l, EDUARD H. MASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at White Marsh, in the county of Gloucester and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Hat-Pin Guards; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to ymake and use the same.

This invention relates to a hat pin guard, the object thereof being to provide a device adapted to be secured upon the pointed end of a hat pin, to retain the hat pin in place, and also to guard against the point of the pin penetrating or scratching adjacent persons or objects.

A further object is to provide `an improved protecting sleeve for the hat pin guard to prevent a veil or the trimming of the hat from becoming damaged by contact 'with said guard. e

Referring specifically to the drawings, l indicates a pin provided with a flared head 2, and a circumferential groove 7 near its point.

To prevent the accidental removal of the pin from the guard and to prevent the hair, a. veil, or hat trimmings being caught on the slitted end of the guard, l provide a protector tube 9 which is slidably mountedl over the guard. The protector tube is of a diameter' at its end 10a to snugly lit over the tongues and that part of pin may be entered or removed, the tongues yielding outwardly to permit of its passage, and the rib G engaging in or sliding out of groove 7 by the resiliency of the tongues.

After the pin has been entered in the guard 3 and the annular rib 6 seated in the circumferential groove 7 and the protecting tul e 9 is moved longitudinally of the guard until the flared inner face of the end l0 thereof engages the flared end 5 of the guard and the end l()a is positioned nearer the rib 6, out- Ward movement of the resilient tongues will be prevented, making it impossible under ordinary circumstances to remove the pin from the guard until the protector tube is again moved outwardly on the guard so as to release said tongue. When the protector is thus moved to hold the tongues against yielding, the flared turned in end 10 will protect the slitted end of the guard inthe manner specified. The protector tube is prevented from leaving the guard 3 by the liarevd ends of the resilient tongues.

What I claim is: c

A. hat pin protector comprising a tubular member having a closed ared outer end and an open flared inner end, and slitted from the inner flared end to about its mid length, to form tongues, said tongues being transversely grooved forming an inwardly projecting annular rib, and a protecting sleeve slidably mounted upon the tubular member,
