To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, LoUIs RECHTSOHAF- FEN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria- Hungary, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Pin Guard, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved hat pin guard, arranged to permit of quickly and convenient-1y placing the same in position on the end of the pin, to protect the point of the pin when the latter is in use for fastening a hat to the head of a wearer.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a plan View of one end of the hat pin; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the hat pin; and Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 1.

The shank A of the hat pin is provided at each end with a point A and a reduced neck A immediately in the rear of the point. The pin is provided atone end with a head B and upon its other end the guard B is mounted. The guard B, which is in the form of a head, has a body B provided with a recess B into which project clamping jaws C, C, connected with each other at their inner ends by a reduced spring portion 0 so as to allow the jaws G and G to move toward and from each other. The inner ends of the jaws G and C are secured in place on the body B by a pin D and the inner or opposite faces of the jaws C and C are recessed to conform to the shape of the point A and the reduced neck A as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2, and the said jaws C and C are tapering on the outside and engaged by a sleeve E to permit of opening or closing the jaws C and G relative to the point A and the neck A The sleeve E extends partly into the recess B and when the sleeve E is in an inward position the jaws C and C are free to open so as to permit of passing the point A and its neck A between the jaws, and when the sleeve E is pushed outward then the jaws C and C close and firmly engage the point A and the neck A to securely fasten the head B in place on the shank A and to prevent the shank A from being pulled out of the head B.

It is understood that by providing the inner or opposite faces of the jaws C and O with recesses or seats for the point A and the neck A the said terminals of the shank A are completely inclosed by the jaws and cannot be moved either farther inward or outward after the sleeve E is moved outward to close the jaws C and C.

In using the hat pin, the free end of the shank A is passed through the hat and hair of the wearer, and the guard B is placed in position on the free end of the shank A, so that point of the hat pin is protected.

In practice, a dealer can carry a large number of shanks A in stock and fit onto any one of the shanks such a guard as is selected by the person, and the user of the pin can readily detach the guard whenever it is desired to use the hat pin when placing the latter in position or removing it from the hat and hair.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A hat pin guard, comprising a recessed head, tapering clamping jaws in the recess of the head and havin their inner smaller ends connected by a reduced spring portion, the outer larger ends of the aws projecting out of the recess, a transverse pin in the head between the members of the spring portion of the jaws, and a sleeve slidable in the recess of the head on the jaws and having its outer end projecting out of said recess, said sleeve being of less length than the jaws and of a diameter less than that of the outer larger ends of said jaws.
