To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE Fos'rnr, a citizen of the United State s,f,res iding at South Haven, in the county of Van Buren and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Pin Guards, of which the following is -a specification.

My invention relates to hat pins and more particularly to a hat pin guard. v v

The primary object of my invention resides in the provision of an improved guard with the points of hat pins for covering the projecting pointed end of a hat pin whenit hasbeen applied to a hat, thus overcoming the possibility of persons being injured, the guard itself being peculiarly formed and constructedso that it is:

pleasing to the eye when in use. 1

Another object of my invention resides in the provision of an improved conical guiding and retaining means for the guard, said means being rigidly associated with the body of the guard.

A still further object of my invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described that is simple in construction, efficient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.

Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is aside elevational view of my invention positioned on a hat pin; Fig. 2 is alongitudinal central sectional view of the invention associated with the shank of a'hat pin, illustrating especially the means for securing the guiding means to the tubular casing; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the upper end of the casing showing the guiding and retaining means in elevation to illustrate the spring and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 2.

The guiding and retaining means in this instance consists essentially of a conical element 14 arranged centrally within the casing 4 and secured V at its outer edge to the rod 13 as previously described. The apex of the element 12 is elongated as'shown at 15, the extreme terminal of which is flared outwardly as indicated by the numeral 16.: The tubular apex is slit longitudinally as atl? inwardly and longitudinally from its outer end to provide spring pin retaining arms 18 for facilitating frictional engagement between the tubular apex, which incidentally is slightly less in diameterthan the ordinary pin shank, and the'pointed end of the pin v shank as 'illustrated 'to advantage in Fig, 2 of the drawings. can easily be seen that I have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be placed upon the mar-.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is 1- A hat pin guard including a cylindrical casing, a cap removably mounted on one end of the casing, a conical guide member having an elongated tubular apex and arranged in the opposite end of the casing, the base'of the guide member and the free end of the casing being rolled upon themselves to provide a rigid connection therebetween, and oppositely arranged spring arms provided by slitting the guide member throughout the length of the apex and adapted to frictionally engage and retain the pin point within the casing subsequent to the insertion of the pin into and through the guide member.
