To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a draft rigging of high cushioning capacity, and one of cheap and simple construction.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a plan view partly in horizontal section illustrating a draft rigging for railway cars embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a half cross sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a half cross sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan View partly in horizontal section illustrating the position of the parts of the draft rigging when in full compression. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail showing in perspective the wedge and one of the main and one of the supplementalfriction blocks.
Referring to the drawings 6, 6 represent draft sills or parts of the car frame to which the draft rigging is applied, 7 the end sill, 8 the draw bar, 9 the draw bar carry iron, 10 the tie plate suitably secured to the draft members and adapted to sustain the draft gear 11, which is mounted between them, 12, 12 the front stop shoulders, 13, 13 the rear stop shoulders, the said stop shoulders being preferably formed integrally with the draft members, 14 the draft yoke encircling the draft gear, and suitably secured at its forward end to the draw bar, preferably by the rivets 15, 15.
The draft gear 11 comprises a shell 16 and spring mechanism and friction mechanism hereinafter described within the shell. The shell 16 is preferably substantially rectangular in shape, closed at its rear end by the preferably integral plate 17, and provided at its forward end with the plates 18, 18, which are preferably integral with the shell, which have between them the forward opening of the shell 19. Within the opening 19 of the shell is the spring cap 20 adapted to reciprocate therein, and provided in its forward face with the recess 21 to receive the head 22 of the connecting bolt 23 which passes through the same and through the rear plate 17 of the shell where it is provided with a nut 24.
In preferable'construction the rear plate 17 of the shell is provided with a rearward hollow extension 25 against which the draft yoke 14 engages, and within the recess 26 of which the connecting rod 23 is adapted to operate on relative movement of the spring cap and shell. Against the rear face 27 of thesaid spring cap is seated the preliminary spring member 28, the said spring member preferably comprising an inner spring 29 and an outer spring 30, the same being seat.- ed at their rear ends against the inner face of the hollow movable spring case 31, which spring case is open at its forward end 32 and closed at its rear end by the preferably integral plate 33.
In preferable construction the forward end of the spring case is received within the spring cap. On full compression of the preliminary spring member 28 the spring cap engages the forward end 32 of said spring case. The rear end of the spring case engages the forward face 34 of the wegde 35, the said wedge being provided with a perforation 36 through which the connecting rod 23 passes, and having rearward angular wedging faces 37, 37, each wedging face being adapted to engage an adjacent friction face 38 of one of the main friction blocks 49, which are preferably two in number, there being one at either side of the said wedge. The said main friction blocks are each rearwardly provided with a preferably flat friction face 39 engaging the rear friction face 40 of the interior of the shell, and are each forwardly provided with the angular friction faces 38 and 41, the friction face 41 being adapted to frictionally engage the rear angular friction face 42 of one of the supplemental friction blocks 43, there being preferably one supplemental friction block for each of the main friction blocks. Each supplemental friction block is rearwardly provided with the angular friction face 42, and is laterally provided with a friction face 44 which engages the adjacent interior side 45 of the shell 16. Between each of the supplemental friction blocks and the forward portion of the shell, preferably one of the plates 18, is seated one of the main spring members 46,
each of said main spring members preferably comprising an outer spring 47 and an inner spring 48 nested therein.
The front stop shoulders 12, 12 are suitably extended toward each other so that the spring cap 20 may engage against the same in normal position of the parts of the draft gear, or on forward movement of the same. gThe normal position of the parts of the raft rigging is illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.) On rearward movement of the draw bar the spring cap 20 is forced rearwardly, compressing the preliminary spring member 28 within the spring case 31 until the forward end of said spring case engages with the spring cap 20. Thereupon the said movable spring case 31 through its engagement with the wedge 35 forces the said wedge rearwardly.
The Wedge faces 37, 37 of the wedge 35 frictionally engaging the friction faces '38 of the main friction blocks 49 forces the main friction blocks 49 outwardly, the said main friction blocks being in frictional engagement with the wedge and with the rear friction face of the shell and with the friction faces of the supplemental friction blocks. The supplemental friction blocks 43 are forced forwardly by the outward movement of the main friction blocks 49, the said forward movement of the supplemental friction blocks being resisted by the main spring members 48, which are compressed between the forward portion of the shell and the said supplemental friction blocks. -.The compressing movement of the parts within the shell may be limited by the engaging of the wedge against the rear plate 17 of the shell.
In the rearward movement herein de scribed the shell engages the rear stop shoulders 13, 13. On forward movement of the draw bar the spring cap 20 engages the front stop shoulders, and the shell is drawn forwardly by the draft yoke 14 compressing the preliminary spring member 28 until the spring case .31 engages the spring cap.
ereupon the wedge forces the nain friction blocks outwardly, which in turn force the supplemental friction blocks forwardly, compressing the main spring members in the manner described hereinbefore in detailing the operation, of the parts on rearward movement of the draw bar. The position of the parts in full compression in pulling movement is illustrated by Fig. 4 of the drawings.

A draft gear for railway cars comprising a friction shell, main springs, laterally movable and longitudinally movable friction blocks cooperable with said shell, a wedge and spring case within the shell, springs within the spring case, the spring case engaging the wedge, the main springs engaging the friction blocks, whereby on movement of the'spring case the friction blocks and main springs are brought into compression resisting action.

In a draft gear for railway cars, a shell, main springs within said shell at either side thereof, a plurality of laterally movable friction blocks and a plurality of longitudinally movable friction blocks within said friction shell, the main springs being seated between said shell and the longitudinally movable friction blocks, a wedge engaging the laterally movable friction blocks, said friction blocks being in engagement with the longitudinally movable friction blocks:

In a draft gear for railway cars, a shell closed at one end and provided with .an opening at its other end, main springs within the shell at either side thereof, a spring case disposed between said main springs, springs within the spring case, a spring cap engaging said spring, a Wedge engaging the spring case, laterally movable friction blocks engaged by said wedge, longitudinally movable friction blocks engaged by said first mentioned friction blocks, the main springs being seated between the shell and the longitudinally movable friction blocks, the spring cap being adapted to reciprocate within the opening in said shell.
8. In a draft gear for railway cars, a shell, main springs separated and parallelly arranged and a wedge within said shell, a set of longitudinally movable friction blocks and a set of laterally movable friction blocks, each main spring being seated against a longitudinally movable friction block, the laterally movable friction blocks being adapted to move the longitudinally movable friction blocks in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the wedge.
9. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination of draft members, stop members, draw bar and draft yoke with a shell,
main springs, a wedge, laterally movable friction blocks, longitudinally movable friction blocks and spring case within the shell, springs within the spring case, a spring cap engaging said springs, the said spring cap being adapted on movement of the draw bar to compress the springs within the spring case, and after such compression to engage the spring case, the spring case engaging the wedge, the laterally movable friction blocks being disposed between said wedge and the longitudinally movable friction blocks, and adapted to compress the main springs upon engagement of the spring cap with said spring case.
10. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with a friction shell having extended transversely arranged friction surfaces, of laterally movable friction blocks cooperating with said extended friction surfaces, a centrally disposed wedge cooperating with said friction blocks and interposed therebetween, longitudinally movable friction blocks within said shell and disposed at the outer ends of the laterally movable friction blocks and coiiperable with the latter, the longitudinally movable friction blocks being moved in the opposite direction to the movement of the wedge when the latter is operated, a longitudinally arranged spring coiiperable with each of said longitudinally movable friction blocks and having one end thereof in engagement therewith, and abut ments for the opposite ends of said springs, said abutments being stationary relatively to the shell.
11. In a draft gear for railway cars, a hollow shell forwardly provided with a central opening, a centrally disposed spring case within the shell, main springs at either side thereof within said shell, a wedge engaging said spring case, laterally movable friction blocks engaging the wedge, and longitudinally movable friction blocks disposed between the main springs and laterally movable friction blocks, a spring within the spring case and a spring cap engaging said springs, and adapted on compression of said springs to engage the spring case.
12. In a draft gear for railway cars, in combination, a shell, main springs and a wedge within said shell, a set of longitudinally movable friction blocks, a set of laterally movable friction blocks, said main springs being seated against the longitudinally movable friction blocks, the laterally movable friction blocks being adapted to move the longitudinally movable friction blocks in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the wedge, and a preliminary compression spring separate from and operated independently of the main springs.
18. In a draft gear for railway cars, the combination with a shell having a wedge, laterally movable and longitudinally movable friction shoes therewithin, and three springs located forwardly of said shoes, said springs being parallelly arranged one in the center line of the gear and the other two on opposite sides thereof.
14. In a draft rigging for railway cars, in combination, draft members, stop members, a draw bar and draft yoke with a shell, main springs, friction blocks, a wedge and spring case within the shell, springs within the spring case, a spring cap engaging said spring, the said spring being adapted on rearward movement of the draw bar to compress the spring within the spring case, and after such compression to engage the spring case, the said spring cap being adapted on forward movement of the draw bar to engage the stop members, and after compression of the spring within the spring case to engage said spring case.
15. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with a friction shell having a transversely extending friction surface on the inner side of the rear wall thereof and longitudinally extending friction surfaces on the inner faces of the side walls thereof, of a pair of laterally movable friction blocks coiiperable with the first named friction surface of the shell, a wedge cooperable with said blocks, longitudinally movable friction blocks cooperable with the first named friction blocks and with the longitudinally arranged friction surfaces of the shell, and springs interposed between the longitudinally movable friction blocks and another wall of the shell.
