Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that. I, VViLLiAM H. MINER, a citizen of 'the United States, residing at Chicago,'in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and 4exact description, reference 'being had 'to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars'.v
'The object of my invention is to provide a draft rigging of efficient operation, and one adapted to afford an easy initial movement in practical operation.
In the drawings for 'ng a part of this specication Figure-1! is a side elevation partly in longitudinal section on line,1'1 of Fig. 2 of a draft rigging embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view partly in horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings 3, 3 represent draft sills or parts of the car frame to which the draft rigging is attached, 4 the end sill, 5 the buffer block, 6 the draw-bar carry- 8, 8 the front stop members having the front stop shoulders 9, 9, 10, 10 the rear stop members having the 11, 11, 12 the draw bar, 13 the draft yoke, 14 the coupler key connecting the draft yoke to the draw bar, 15 the front follower, and 16 the rear follower. All the foregoing parts are of well known construction.
Seated within the lateral opening 17 of the draft yoke and between the front and rear followers 15 and 16 respectively is the draft gear 18. lThe draft gear comprises a shell 19,` and contained parts hereinafter described, a spring 20-seated between the shell 19 4and the front follower- 15, and springs 38, 39 seated between the shell 19 and the rear lfbll'ower 16. The shell 19 comprises the friction cylinder 22 and the spring cage 23. Within the friction cylinder are the friction shoes 24, preferably three in number, and in annular arrangement, and the wedge 25 andthe antifriction rolls 26, one of which is interposed between each friction shoe and the wedge.
Within the spring cage double-faced spring seat 27, the said spring seat being forwardly provided with a boss 28, which is adapted to engage the friction 23 is the movable 'slices 24 upon the compression of the spring 29, which is seated within the said boss 28 `and between the movable spring seat 27 and the friction shoes. Between the rear end 30 of the spring cage and the rear face of the movable spring seat 27 is seated .a plurality of springs, preferably comprising two sets of two springs each, the outer springs 31, 3 1 each 'having nested within 1t an inner spring 32.
The spring cage .is interiorly provided at either side and at its forward end with a stop bolt 33 adapted to limit the forward movement of the movable spring seat' 27. A connecting bolt 34 connects the wedge 25 with the movable spring seat 27. The spring 20 is disposed about the friction cylinder 22 inclosing the same, and is seated at its rear end against the shell at the forward face 35 of the spring cage 23, and at its forward end against the front follower 15.
The shell 18 is rearwardly provided with a rearwardly opening recess 36, the inner face of which is provided with bosses 37, preferably two in number. Around each boss and between the spring cage at its one end and the rear follower at its other end is seated an inner spring 38 and an outer spring 39.
l/Vhen the parts of the draft gear are in normal position, as illustrated in the drawings, 2. space, as indicated at the numeral 40 inFig. 2, is provided between the rear fol- -lower and the rear ends of the shell so as to permit compression of the springs 38, 38 and 39, 39 within the said recess 36 before the shell comes into engagement with the rear follower 16. Aspace is also provided, as indicated at the numeral 4l between the wedge 25 and the front follower partial compression of the encircling spring 2O before the front follower lgengages the wedge 25. It will thus be'seen that.on movement of the draw bar "the. inclosing spring 20 at the forward end of the` gear andthe springs 38 and 39 at the rearward end of the gear serve as preliminary compression resisting members, 'and afford an easy initial action that insures the easy starting and stopping of trains of cars to which draft rigging embodying this gear is applied. On compression of the springs 38 and 39 within the recess 36 the shell comes into engagement with the rear follower 16.
