INYENTOR. Jasga/r H rn5 \DATTORNEE DRAFT R IGGING FOR RMLWAY CARS.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT-2.1915- z agsm rosnrn Bars,- or cnroaeo, rumors, .assrenon 'ro WILLIAIvI n. inna, or CHAZ'FE,
I new some DRAFT-RIGGING ron RAILWAY-CARS.
To (122 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in DraftRiggings for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full,- clear, concise, and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings," forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in draft riggings for railway cars.
One object of the invention .is to provide a draft rigging wherein the cushioning medium is actuated in the same direction upon either inward or outward movement of the draw-bar.
Another object of the invention is to provide a draft rigging wherein the yoke or yoke acting member is moved forwardly under both buff and draft.
Another object of the invention is to provide a draft rigging wherein a spring action only is obtained under draft and a combined spring and friction action under bufl.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a draft rigging so arranged that the size and weight of the cheek plates are reduced, and to minimize the number of necessary parts. V
In the drawing forming a part of this specificatiomFigure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken centrally of the gear and showing the parts in normal position, Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the position of the parts under full bufi. Fig. 3 is a view similar to the preceding figures but showing the position of the parts under draft. And Fig. l is a sectional view taken on the line H of.
Fig. 1.
In said drawing, 10-10 denote the center sills to each of which is secured a single stop casting or cheek plate 11 having a pair of vertically extending shoulders 12-12 spaced apart sufliciently to receive the end of a heavy stationary abutment 13, the abutment being slipped in from theunder side of the sills'after it has been assembled with the yoke as hereinafter described.
The draw bar 14: is provided With the usual upper and lower shoulders 15 -1 5 with which cotiperate corresponding intllriled gibsior shoulders 1616 formed on -.-:the e tr 2 The yoke A comprises two Specification of Letters Patent.
like members 17-17, each. a which has upper and lower arms lid-18, vertical portion 19, a side wall 20 at the front end thereof and upper and lower integral wedges 212l. he two members 1.v 1? are held together by bolts 221-22 extendi transversely through suitable perforate" ears 23. The yoke A encircles the ahutment 13, as shown, and interposed between the- Patented Apr. 2a, tor a. Application filed September 2, 1915. Serial No. 48,598. i
26 slidable upon the front .iface of the abut J ment 13, an outer inclined wedgingface 2? cooperable with the adjacehtwedge-Qi of the yoke, and inner wedge'faces 28-28 cooperable with correspondingly arranged 1 wedge faces 29 formed on the inner end of a wedge block'30, having a stud 31 seated in a suitable recess in the draw-bar.
The operation is as follows:
Upon inward movement of the'drawdoar, the wedge block 30 will move rearwardly and simultaneously force the members 25-25 laterally. This lateral movement of the members 25 will in turn force the rear. en'dg-of the wedges 21 and hence the yoke A, forwardly,
there being a slidable connection between the yoke and draw-bar, as will'be under' stood. The forward movement of the yoke A will compress the spring 24 inasmuch as the forward end of the latter is held against the stationary abutment 13.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that.
there is a combined spring and friction action upon inward or buffing movement of the draw-bar, the friction being obtained between the sets of surfaces 28-29 21 g! 1;
and 26 and the front face of the abutment the spring 24, as will be understood. In this action of the gear the wedges and wedge blocks do not come into play.
From the preceding'description, it will he seen that I provide a gear wherein a com- In draft, the draw-bar shoulders will engage the yoke gibs 16 and compress ployed inasmuch as only a single plate is required, and the arrangement is such that any M. "C. B. draw-bar may .be' employed without the necessity of using rivets or coupler keys.
I I am aware that many changes and variations may be made in the details of 'construction and arrangement of parts, and I do not wish to be limited to the specific construction herein shown and described inas- -much as the same is merely illustrative.
Stated in a broad manner, the invention differs from the prior art, so far as I am aware, in providing means for translating a force in one direction to a force in the opposite direction during one action of'the gear, with the result that either an inward thrust or an outward pull is applied to the shock absorbing medium always in the same direction. I, therefore, contemplate all changes and modifications asfairly come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1 In a draft rigging, the combination witha draw-bar, a cushioning: medium, and a yoke movable with the draw-bar in draft,
of means co-acting with the yoke for mov-' moving the yoke forwardly upon rearward movement of the draw-bar.
4:. In a draft, rigging, the combination with a yoke, draw-bar, fixed abutment, and a cushioning medium, of devices interposed between said draw-bar, abutment, and yoke for translating inward pressure from the draw-bar to an outwardly dlrected force on the yoke.
the same direction upon either i'nwar In a draft rigging, the combination with a drawbar, friction elements, a spring, and means for actuating the friction elements upon rearward movement only of the drawbar, sa d spring being compresseg in or outward movement of the draw-bar.
6. In a draft rigging, the combination with a draw-bar, of a yoke having inclined friction surfaces, friction blocks cooperable therewith, said blocks-being operated from the draw-bar upon inward movement only of the latter, a fixed abutment against which said blocks bear, and a spring.
7 In a draft rigging, the combination with draft sills, draw-bar, yoke, fixed abutment, and spring located on one side of said abutment, ofa plurality of friction devices disposed on the opposite side of said abutment and coiper'able therewith.
with draft sills and a fixed abutment mounted thereon, of a draw-bar, a yoke movable interposed between said abutment and the rear end of said yoke, the latter having wedge acting portions on the interior thereof, a pair of wedge blocks c'oiiperable there-j with and a wedge at the rear of said drawbar coacting with said blocks.
10. In a draft rigging, the combination with a draw-bar and yoke, the draw-bar being movable inwardly of the yoke, a fixed abutment, a spring-interposed between said abutment and yoke, and wedge members interposed between the draw-bar, abutment,
and yoke for forcing the yoke outwardly upon inward movement of the draw-bar.
11. As an article of manufacture, a yoke for draft riggings consisting of two members adapted to be detachably secured together and, when secured together, forming a hood to slidably receive a draw bar butt,
said yoke havingintegral wedges on the inner faces of the arms thereof, said wedges bemg located opposite each other.
12. In a draft rigging, the combination with draft sills, a member stationary relatively thereto, and a cushioning medium on the rear side of said member, of a draw bar, devices cooper-able with said draw bar and movable forwardly with the latter in draft, said devices acting upon the rear end of the cushioning medium during said draft movement, and means interposed between said draw bar, stationary member, and devices for translating inward pressure from the -draw bar to an outwardly directed force on said devices.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 14th day of August, 19-15.
-JOSEPH HARRIS.
