Specification of Letters iatent.
Patented July 13, 1915.
Application filed March 18, 1914. Serial 110,825,536. i
To all whom itmag concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC HIRVI, a citizen of Finland, residing at Daisytown, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and use: ful Improvements in Scrubbing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in floor scrubbing machines and its object is to produce a machine of this class comprising a frame in which a rotary perforated water tank is journaled that is' provided with plungers that intermittently engage cam plates, also carried by said frame, whereby a portion of the contents of said tank are released upon a rotary brush disposed immediately below said tank to moisten the same in order that it may perform the scrubbing operation as it rotates.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved floor scrubbing machine. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line 1-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail of the water feed.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several Views.
My machine comprises the U-shaped frame 1 to the inverted base of which a handle 2 is secured and said frame is provided with supporting legs 3 provided with casters 4E. A brush shaft 5 is j ournaled in the frame 1 and is provided with a rotary scrubbing brush 6; one end of said brush shaft projecting beyond the frame 1 as at 7 to carry a toothed wheel 8 which meshes with a toothed wheel 9 disposed upon a projection 10 of a tank shaft 11 which extends through the water tank 12 and is journaled in the frame 1; the projection 10 being provided with a handle 13 by which it is rotated as well as the brush shaft through the medium of the transmission described. The hollow water tank is formed with three or more rows of perforations 14 which extend longitudinally of the same and over which a rubber band 15 is normally disposed which band is secured to and carried by a metal plate 16 extending from end to end of said tank. 17 is a spring disposed about a pin 18 and abutting said plate 16 at one end and being'formed upon the pin 18 which pin is connected to the shaft 11 and projected into an aperture in the plate 16 which plate is slidable longitudinally of said pin.
20 is a lug formed integral with or secured a to plate 16 and projected through an aperture in the tank for intermittent engagement with the cam plate 21 secured to the frame 1 adjacent said tank. Contact of said lug a washer 19 at the opposite end, said washer with said cam plate will raise the rubber g3;
band and plate 16 off the perforations in the tank against the tension of the spring 17 permitting a portion of the contents of said tank to escape upon the brush 6 and moisten the same.
To one end of the frame 1 an arm 22 is secured which pivotally carries a lever 23 which at one end 1s spring-connected as at 24 to said frame and that at its opposite end carries a pin 25 passing through an aperture in the frame and into a socket formed in the axle 11 of the water tank and by removing said pin from said socket the tank may be removed from the frame to be cleaned 0r refilled.
What is claimed is 1. In a scrubbing machine, a frame provided with a handle, a rotary scrubbing brush mounted in said frame, an apertured rotary water tank mounted in said frame directly above said scrubbing brush, manually operable means associated with said tank and brush for actuating the same, cam plates carried by said frame adjacent said water tank, a closure within said tank normally disposed over the apertured portion of the same and means operatively engaging said closure for yieldingly retaining the same in engagement with the apertured portions of said tank and means carried by said 1 tank and brush for actuating the same, cam plates carried by said frame adjacent said Water tank, a closure normally disposed upon the apertured portion of said Water tank, a pin, provided with a Washer, connecting the shaft of said tank and passing through a perforation in said closure and means carried by said closure projected through said tank for intermittent engagement With the said cam plates as the tank is rotated whereby said closure is displaced from the apertured portion of said tank to permit the escape of the liquid contents of the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 15 as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of tWo subscribing Wit- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, I). G.
