Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE;
JANE PARISH, OF LEICESTER, COUNTY OF LEICESTER, ENGLAND.
STENCIL-DRUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,889, dated March 4,1890. Application filed August 25, 1888. Serial No. 288,812. (No model.) Patented in England February 16, 1888, No. 2,335-
To all whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JANE PARISH, residing at No. 6 Maynard Street, Leicester, in the county of Leicester, England, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented a new and useful Stencil Apparatus or Drum, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 2,335, bearing date as of the 16th of February, 1888,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stencil-drums, the stencils being arranged upon a suitable frame in the form of a polygon, and may be made from one strip of metal or from separate pieces secured together by clips in the manner shown and described; also the arrangement of a self-inking brush inside the polygonal stencil, mounted in a frame with springs and weighted so as to be raised when out of use, and the ink is prevented from passing out of the reservoir therein, for the purpose of stenciling or printing from stencils of the character herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a View in perspective of the stencil apparatus or polygonal stencil. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, having the selfacting inkingbrush D. Fig. 3 is an end view of the drum with inking brush, and Fig. 4 is a View in detail of the plate E in connection with the inking device.
Similar letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The stencilsA are mounted upon the polygonal frame B, made to consist of any number of angles, the letters or figures 0 being previously cut out in the strip or plates of metal before being secured to the frame by the flanges F, the interchangeable plates being secured together by loops or hooks and eyes G; or I may provide that the polygonal stencil shall carry an inking brush. For this purpose the arms 79 are attached to the frame B, and in the slot 21 is seated the axle b, so that the drum can be turned to the letter or figure required to be brought to the bottom. Below the said axle is mounted the inkingbrush D, riding upon the trunnions (1, rest ing in the upper part of the vertical slots on the blocks and springs d in the brackets d of the holder 0., the handle of the brush being weighted, (for the reason before stated.) If the handle is raised to the vertical posi tion,.as seen in Fig. 3, and the brush pressed down lightly on the bottom or inner face of the drum, by manipulating the handle the ink will percolate through the holes 6 of the plate E (shown in Fig. 4) down the bristles e. Then the stencil letter or figure can be marked upon the surface of the article to 1 circular frame or wheel, patented by Morrison,
No. 137,317, April 1, 1873. I do not claim such a combination. Also a wire frame or fork; having bars arranged to run parallel to each other, called tines, and letter-p1ates strung loosely thereon, has been patented by eller, No. 360,637, of April 5, 1887 and, further, a stencil-disk having letters or figures cut out radially, in combination with an inking-brush, as described in Patent No. 257,423, to Williamson, of May 2, 1882. TheseI do not claim in my invention; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. A polygonal stencil drum having stencil-plates adjustably secured on its periphery and means for revolving the same, substantially as described.
2. A polygonal stencil-drum having stenoil-plates adj ustably secured on its periphery, a frame provided with a central axis for re JANE PARISH.
Witnesses: I L
