\ the one direction and it receives no reci roca 'tract the jaw from said clamping action.
From the ho1der'19, the razor blade overhangs the sharpening hone 6, with its cutting edge in proper'mclined relation to, and
sin contact with'th'e upper surface of the hone'. In thepresent mechanism the razor blade receives a rectilinear stroke along the surface of the hone with a semi-rotary reyersal at the end of the stroke to bring the 1;) cutting edge of the razor into proper .osi-
' :7 .tion for the succeeding rectilinear stro e in the'other directiomand so on serially dnrtrig a continued operation of the machine with a view to duplicate the ordinary move- 1-5. ments generally used in' the proper honing of razors by hand, and to such end the sharpening hone receives asimultaneous reciprocatingrectilinear movement in a path at substantially a ri ht-angle to the 20, razor blade. The descrified movements, at
their proper eriods, are attained inthe present invention by a construction and'co'mination ofparts as follows: 22'. i s,,the
, main driving shaft receiving rotation fromf zeany suitablasource, and usually a manually.
. "operated hand crank23, as shown. 24 is'a primary countershait operatively-connected" to the aforesaid driving shaft by a pinion 25 and gear wheel'26 as shown. 27' is a crank 80 pin, preferably? arranged on the gear wheel I26, and having link connections 28 with a vibrato arm '29 pivoted at its lower end fto .the ed. plate 1. with its upper and free and connected to the carriage 17 carrying the razor, by a link 30, as shown. The
- rectilinear reciprocation to said hone carrier numson with the rec procation of the razor preferredform of this part carriage. In the f the present invention, the'crank' arm 33 connected to the countershaft32 by .a prin'gpawl and detent connection 35 of any Eordinatjconstraotirin, and by which the reationof the honecari'ier is said crank arm revolves whenthe crank arm is revolved-1n the 1' direction.
ved from said construct on is, that the ret the razor carriage, and with thehone "caronly The useful function dethe other shafts can be efi'eotedin a; reYerse direction with a normal movement f ftc qn -zwjia'the operation of honingout a nick in the cutting edge of the razor blade, and which is a frequent necessity in the operation of honing razors.
36 is a 5 ring plate or friction member engaging t e semi-rotary shaft 18 of the razor holder'before described, and adapted to retard the semi rotary motion thereof, so that thesame will stop in its reversing. movements with a ceasing of the positive impelling action of the intermittent operatingmechanism now to be described.
37 is a pinion carried by thesliaft '18 above referred to, and 3815 a companion sector gear meshing therewith. Said sector gearis pivoted on the carriage 17 and is provided with 11 depending arm 39 adapted to be intermittently movedin the automatic manner hereinafter described.
40 are stop pins arranged in. separated relation on the bed plate 1 in-the path of the depending .arm 39 above described, and
adapted to alternately contact with the same and impart oscillation thereto, as the same travels with the carriage 17, and as said carriage nears the end of its, stroke in one direction, or. the other. With the described construction the reversal movements of the.
razor holder and razor" at the end ofthe rectilinear reciprocations thereof, as heretofor deser-1bed-, are effected 111 an automatic manner. In the preferred construction of thepresent invention "said step pins 49am adjustable in order-to regulate the degree or 'amofuri't of reversal movement, and to such end are carried on oneof the arms of the ell crank levers' 41 pivotedon the I ""t e"1' as. shown. The other arms of .saidi "l anklevers are formed to receive vertical-adjusting screws 42 having abutmentor bearing 11 on the, said bed plate.
' Haviligthus' fu ly, described my said invention what I claim as new and :desire to I secureby Letters Patent, is':'- v I '1.- In' a honing. machine, the combination.
