BLADE SHARPENER.

This invention relates to a device for sharpening the blades. more particularly the two-edged blades of safety razors. A feature of the invention is that the blades or blade to be sharpened are, or is. caused to-execute a see-saw motion and also to reciprocate in the direction of its length, i. e. on a line extending square to the plane described by the blade in executing its see-saw motion.
By this arrangement a more perfect grinding of the blade is obtained because the action of the device more closely resembles .the operation of stropping a blade by hand.
The two difierent movements of theblade 1 support are imparted to it by means of a single driving member and by thus reducing the number of driving parts a reliable sure operation is obtained. Besides the manufacture of the device is thus simplified so that the invention presents considerable advantages from an economical as well as functional point of view.
The invention, which is equally applicable to sharpening devices with one or more pairs of sharpening elements or rolls, is shown in the drawing in which:
Fig. l is a top view of the device equipped with four, roll-shaped sharpening elements with its hinged upper portion swung open, FFig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of i l, Fig. 3 is a top view of the blade-holder, Fig. 4 a side view of the blade-holder, Fig. 5 is a section of the members attached to the ends of the sharpening rolls by which motion is imparted to the blade-holders.
The rolls are rotated by means of a crank handle it attached to the shaft of the roll 6, the rotary motion of which is transmitted to the other rolls through spur wheels z'. The spur wheel 2' and the cam driving member is of each of the rolls a and b consist of a single piece. The cams is each have a peripheral surface, whose distance from its center of rotation varies as shown in Fig. 5, and in addition to this a groove with a curved lateral surface n. The said peripheral surfaces operate to swing the double arm Z of the blade holder m in a see-saw fashion whilst the lateral curved surfaces 1 move the double arm in such a manner as to impart a reciprocating motion to the blade holder in the direction of its longitudinal axis. The relative positions of the cams is must be such that the action of the one on the double arm Z ceases when the action of the other cam commences. Therefore, if the curved lateral surface n of the onecam has shifted the double arm in one direction and released it the curved surface of the other cam will commence shifting the double arm in the o posite direction. In order to obtain smoot engagements and easy motion of the parts the greatest dip of the double arm into a groove and the commence-- ment of its lateral motion take place at the same moment so that the arm always remains in a groove as long as it has to be moved laterally and leaves the groove the moment its lateral movement by the particular cam is intended to cease.
The blade 0 is held in the blade holder m which is e nip ed with a fla 2 that is locked in its la e-holding position by an arm 9 which enters a notch r in the side of a stud s.
I claim:
1. In a blade sharpener a plurality of sharpening rolls, a blade-holder, a blade holder cont-rolling member, and cams engaging with the said member and located at the ends of the said" rolls for imparting concomitant see-saw and reciprocating motions to the blade-holden'iq- 2. In a blade harpener a plurality of sharpening rollsfa blade-holder, a bladeholder controlling member;- and "rotating cams at the ends-ofthe said rollers, the said cams having peripheral surfaces whose distance from, the center of rotation varies, and grooves with sinuating lateral walls, the said peripheral surface being adapted to impart see-saw motions to the blade-holder through the said controlling member, and the sinuating lateral walls being adapted to im art reciprocating motions to the blade-ho der through the said controlling member.
3. In a blade sharpener a plurality of sharpening rolls geared together; a bladeholder; a blade-holder controlling member comprising two wiping edges; a rotating cam at the end of each sharpening roll; said. cams being adapted to engage alternately with the wiping edges of the controlling member and to turn the said member in opposite directions, said cams each having a groove with a sinuating lateral wall adapted to engage with the wiping edges of the controlling member and cause an endwise movement of the blade holder.,
4;. A blade-sharpener comprising a casing; sharpening rolls with shafts journaled 1n the said casin a blade-holder between two sharpening ro ls; a blade-holder controlling member having two wipin extensions; a cam rotatable with each siarpening roll, said cams being adapted to engage alternate-- ly with the wiping extensions of the controlling member, each cam also having a cam surface adapted to engage with the wiping extensions of the controlling member and reciprocate thevblade endwise concomieandra tantly with its sharpening engagement with the rolls.
5. "in a blade sharpener the combination, of a casing with a lower member and an upper member hinged thereto, a pair of shafts journaled in the lower member, a sharpening roll fastened to each of said shafts, a blade holder having arms extending therefrom slidably pivoted in the casing adjacent to said rolls, a cam on each shaft coacting with said arms to reciprocate the blade holder, means coaxial with said shafts to swing said holder simultaneously with its reciprocations, a pair of shafts journaled in the upper member, a sharpening roll fastened to each of the latter shafts and means to simultaneously turn all the rolls when the members of the casing are locked to each other.
