To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALPHoNsn Nnwrroosn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blade-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for sharpening blades and is here illustrated as applied for the sharpening of double edged blades .suchas are used in connection with safety razors.
The invention resides in an improved tiltable blade holder having means adapted for cooperation with a reversing device whereby the blade may be sharpened on both edges;
Specifically it consists of a pair of arms that project outwardly from one end of the tilting holder, these arms being acted on by an elastic reversing device, which engages the arms after the blade leaves the hone or strop, and revolves the holder, so that the blade will be reversed, and upon the return movement the opposite side and edges will be resented to be acted upon.

The invention contemplates an improved blade sharpener comprising means for holding and moving the blade over an abrading surface, a rapid and accurate automatic means for alternately presenting the edges of the blade to the abrading surface after each stroke of the blade-holding means, and
automatic means for reversing the blade and presenting the reversed side thereof to the abrading surface, as desired.
In my present illustration T have shown a hone A, mounted upon a guiding support comprising a base B, and tracks 2 fixed to the base, upon each side of the hone. A carrier is provided for carrying the blade while being sharpened, which carrier comprises a yoke 3, a handle 4 secured to the yoke, an axle 6 to which the yoke is connected at its extremities, and wheels 5 frictionally journaled on the ends of the axle. This axle serves to hold the .blade 7 which is to be sharpened.
As here shown this axle 6 is made in two parts, one of which is movable with relation to the other to form a clamp, so that the blade 7 may be securely held between these two portions with its edges projecting substantially equally upon each side of this axle. The wheels fit upon the axle with sufficient friction so that when these wheels resting on the tracks Qare moved backward or forward, they will cause the axle to tilt and bring either edge of the blade down upon the hone, above which the axle extends at such a distance that when the blade is forced down blade to tilt first in one direction and then in the other, thus alternately bringing the lower edges of the blade into contact with the hone. In order to reverse the blade and present the opposite edges, T have shown the following device: Upon the side of the base is fixed a spring arm 8 forming a laterally yieldable stop and guide. In Fig. 1 l have shown this arm as having one of its ends secured to the side of one of the tracks 2 and the other end is movable on account of the elasticity so that it will swing outward upon the guide pin 9, when actuated for this purpose. At the end of the axle 6, and outside of one of the wheels 5, is a cam or bar 10 having its ends turned outwardly and forming points 11 and 12 each formed with a cam face. These points are bent to form cam surfaces, as shown in the drawing, so that one of them turns downwardly and the other upwardly when the bar is in a position approximately parallel with the blade 7.
The operation will then be as follows: When the handle a is-pushed it carries the frame 3 and the wheels 5, resting upon the track 2, and the blade will be turned downwardly by the friction of the wheels upon the axle on which they turn, until the edge of the blade rests upon the hone at the proper angle. Then it is pushed the length of the bone and then the'motion is reversed.
The reversing of the motion causes the blade to turn so that its opposite edge rests upon the hone Where it continues to rest until it has reached the end. The further motlon of the carrier will bring the edge of the blade of? of the hone and this action will cause the blade to turn downwardly. The arms will partake of this motion until the point 12 rests upon the edge of the plate 8 whlch 10 it follows for a short distance, and by reason of its upturned angular position it forces the plate away from the track, sliding upon the support 9 until the point 12 drops below vthe plate 8 and the wheels continue to turn until the arms and blade have turned into a substantially horizontal position with the arm 11 above the edge of the plate 8. This plate then springs back into its normal position and the arm 11 will ride on the top edge of the plate until it passes the end and the rollers will then revolve in an opposite direction and allow the blade totilt downwardly toward the directionin which it is moving again returned to the hone the opposite side and its edges will be presented for operation.
In Fig. 6 T have shown a modification of the device 8, in which a cam composed of two screw sections 13 is fixed to a turnable shaft 14, so that the inner ends are fixed to the shaft and the outer ends make a half spiral'turn opposite to each other, and these free ends are elastic and produce the desired action in turning the blades, the part 8 being fixed.
It will be manifest that other equivalent modifications may be made to produce the herein-described result and I consider such changes as bein within the scope of the present application and claims.
Having thus described my. invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a blade sharpener, spaced tracks, an interposed abrading element beyond which the tracks extend at one end, a blade holder, a support rotatably carrying the latter and movable over the tracks, and means arranged beyond the abrading element permitting free rotation of the holder when the latter is moved from the abrading element and engaging with the support on movement of the'latter toward the abrading element for retaining the holder in proper position I to engage the abrading element,
2. In a sharpener for double edged blades,
a fixed abrading element, a pivotally mounted blade holder constructed to hold a blade between its cutting edges, means for traversing said blade holder in opposite directions over the abrading element, and rock ing it to bring a side of one edge of the blade against the abrading element on movement in one direction and on reverse movement to bring the corresponding side of the opposite cutting edge against said abrading element, and means arranged beyond one end of the abrading element and in the path of movement of the blade holder for con tacting therewith and turning it over to present to the abrading element the opposite sides of the cutting edges of the blade.
3.1m a blade sharpening device, a supporting body having a trackway, a blade holder formed to hold a blade between its edges, means supporting the holder for reciprocatory movement along the trackway, and means permitting rotation of the holder on movement of the supporting means in one direction and arresting the holder against back movement on reverse movement of the supporting means.
4. In a blade sharpener, spaced tracks, an interposed abrading element beyond which the tracks extend at one end, a blade holder having shaft extensions, wheels frictionally mounted on the latter for movement over the tracks, to effect rotation of the holder on movement from the abrading element, and means for arresting the holder against rotation on movement thereof toward the abrading element.
5. The combination in a blade sharpener, of a fixed abrading element, a holder in which the blade is supported above the abrading element, tracks upon each side of said element, rollers frictionally journaled on said holder and adapted to travel on said tracks and to tilt the holder and blade to bring opposite edges of the blade in contact with the abrading element alternately at each reciprocation, a spring guide secured at the side of a track, and cam armsfixed on the outer end of said holder adapted to co act with said guidd to reverse the holder and blade and to guide the reversed side of the blade to' the abrading element.

7. in a blade sharpener, an abradingele remorse ment, a guiding support, a rotatable blade holder, means mounting the latter on the support for reciprocating movement over the abrading element and for rotating the holder when moved beyond said element, a yieldably mounted guide arm on the support, and a fixed arm rotatable with the holder and adapted to shift the arm from its path in one direction and be arrested thereby to prevent turning of theho'lder in the reverse direction of rotation.
8. In a blade sharpener, an abradin element, a guiding support, a rotatable blade holder means mounting the latter on the support for reciprocating movement over the abrading element and for rotating the hol er when moved beyond said element; and means permitting the rotation of said holder on movement of the latter in one direction and arresting the holder against reverse rotation on movement of the latten in the opposite direction, said last means including a fixed part and a yieldable part, one part being connected with the holder. 9. lln-I a blade sharpener, a rotatably mounted blade holder, a support therefor,
