Figi', i. is an No. 253,542. Divfled and this application filed December S,
Serial No. 290,941.
A particular eigplanation of the illustratecl constrnetioi'i is as follows:
The body of' the refrigerator or other receptacle, (n fragmentonly of wliieli represented) comprises the outer and inner sheet-metal walls or easings A and B. which may lie of any flesireil ooniiguration lint are shown as eoncenric cylinders.
In orfier io provide a suitable (loof-way an opening is formed through the cylindrical loody of the refrigerator to be Closed by a swinging door C, and n floor-frame continuons with tlie sheet metalplates or walls A and B, may be formed around this opening by means of a flange o, on the inner wall B extending: to the inner side of the outer Wall A, and an inwardly projecting flange a, on said outer Wall overlapping Said iinnge Y), and having e reverse bend 0. ting tigliily against the inner Side of the inner Wall. tlnis forming a door-frame inregral with the inner and outer Walls of 75 the refrigerator body.
The door C consists of inner ancl'onter slieei-inetol plates, spaced apart ami slinpefl to Conform to the shane of the inner, and outer Walls of the refrigerator hotly or reoeptziele and forni a'segnnent. thereof elosing' the opening through said body. The inner plete c of the door lies a Wide outwardly projecting, flange or upset portion c" constituting the peripheral edge of the door and tziperinn or inclined sov as to tit snugly' Within :infl against tlie reversely inelineijl eide or edge ot tlie door-frame.` The` flange c terminates in a marginal Hanne 02 whieli embraced by a marginal fianee or return bencl c3 on the outer or frontI door plate. which return. loencl. unilerlies .the terniinai flange 02 on the inner plate and coneeais the connection iietween the two parts. Thus the oloor. ike its surronncling doorframe, is manie etoiig end rigid, its outer and inner 'Weile being spaced and connected in snen manner as to-avoid s paration ofthe paris, and the neriplierai edge oi the door is eontinoons with tlie inner wall c thereoi 100 .so as to' sluit easily with a perfect t, clos! ing into the door-. aine with a Wedge-finieA notion yet; aol-opted to open ont `therefrom easily and Without strain upon the parts, 'Wliiie *olie front door-pinke, with ite` return 105 oencl or fiange cs'einemeing;
fit-
the terminal flange c2 0i the inner' plate, provides an overlapping llange sealing the joint around the outer edge ot the door-frame and at the same time strengthening the structure and concealing the connection between the parts. Both the door and the doable-walled refrigerator body in which the door-frame is formed are shown lined with asbestos sheets D, to render the walls of the structure non-conductive of heat.
In Fig. l, the door is shown attached to its door-frame by leaf-hinges E, and the swinging edge, of the door is provided with a litting F, either a lockanember or catch, adapted to coact with a fitting on the adjacent edge of the door-frame. By reference to Figs. 2 and (S, it will be observed that the butts or leaves of the hinges are secured tothe sheet-metal walls of the. door and door-casing or refrigerator body by screwing or otherwise attaching them to liners G, which are simply metal pieces applied to the under or interior faces of the Walls. The fittings F for the handle and locking members are attached in like manner. By this means, the door hinges and fittings are rigidly and permanently attached to the thin sheet-metal Walls of the structure, without liability of Working loose or tearing out, and Without causing the Weight of the door or strain o. the hlnges or fittings to dent thesheet-metal, since the linersGrvit closely against the interior sides of the Walls, which are clamped between the liners and the hinges or ittings.
door for said opening forming a segment of said body and composed of inner and outerv plates curved in conformity with the curvature of said slieetanetal plates, the inner door-plate having a marginal iange extending transversely of thererigerator Valls parallel with said overlapping door-trameplates and a terminal iange extending parallel With the outer door-plate, the lat-terV having its marginal portion. formed with a return bend clasping said terminal flange of the inner door-plate and forming therewith a continuous rigid marginal portion overlapping the edge of the door-frame, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
