WILLIAM JAMES ROSSITER, 0F REDFIELD, BRISTOL, ENGLAND.
CORSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Application filed April 1, 1913. Serial N o. 758,103.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that :[WiLLIAM J AMES Rossrrrn, a subject of the King oi Great Britain, residing at Redfield, Bristol, in the county of Gloucester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in corsets and it relates to a corset having a band or belt intended for reducing the abdomen. As hitherto constructed, corsets of this type have a band or belt formed in two parts each connected at one end to the back or sides of the corset and provided at the other with means whereby the ends of the aforesaid parts may be secured together in front of the corset. With corsets constructed as above described the presence in the front of the said corset of the hooks, buckles, lacings and other fastenings together with the tightening straps where such are provided, adds considerably to the bulk of the corset at that part.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved construction and arrangement of the belt member whereby the above objection is avoided and the usual fastening in the front dispensed with.
Vith a corset constructed as hereafter described it is possible to obtain a more effective pressure upon the abdomen and hips. At the same time the construction of the corset is such that the belt may be readily tightened when so desired.
Now according to this invention instead of arranging the belt member so that its ends are free and may be joined together when in use the said belt member comprises two or more pieces` of material of suitable widths each of which is attached at one end to the front ot the corset adjacent the front steels or busks, the other ends of said pieces being secured to the back of the corset. The lacing at the back oi the corset is terminated at a point level or nearly level with the upper ends of the material forming the belt. Secured to the back of the stays at the ends of the pieces forming the belt are iaps provided at their free ends with eyelets for the reception of a lace,n by means of which laces the belt may be tightened.
In order that the invention may be the better understood drawings are appended in which Figure l is a view of the outside of one half of a corset embodying the present invention, Fig. 2 is a view of the inside of the same. Fig. 3 is a View showing approximately the appearance of the corset when in use, as seen from the front. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 41E-Jl of Fig. l.
-The main body portion of the corset comprises two sections, one of which is shown in Figs. l and 2, each section being of somewhat irregular contour and having the bottom edge of the portion extending around the sides and front of the body of the wearer designated a. To this portion is secured a back-piece g, as along the line Z, which piece extends somewhat below the bottom edge a as will be clear from Fig. 2. The rear edge of t-he back-piece g is provided with eyelets extending down from the top of the piece to a point somewhat below the middle, into which eyelets are threaded the lace c, whereby the upper part of the corset may be tightened.
Secured to the outside of each section of the corset substantially along the line Z are iaps (l, the upper ends of which extend slightly above the termination of the eyelets in the piece g, as is indicated by c. The rear edges of these flaps have eyelets into which the lace Z is threaded. Secured also to the outside of each section of the corset along the line Z are two or more pieces of material which are sewed together to form a belt member e of a suitable width for supporting the abdomen. The upper edge of this belt member designated (Z2, is slightly below the upper end of the flaps d, while its bottom edge extends below and overlaps the side and front of the portions of each section and is substantially on a line with the bottom of the back piece g. The other end of the belt member is secured to the front of the corset adjacent the steels or busks f, the belt member being free from the corset at all intermediate points. Fastening means m may be provided for the front portions of the belt members which extend below the bottom edge of the corset (see Fig. 3). By making the belt members e in several pieces, the same may be shaped to the contour of the body so that it may overlap the skirt of the corset without bulging. The belt members e and the lower portions of the corset are tightened by means oiE the flaps d and lace d, independently of the tightening means or lace c for the upper portion of the corset whereby it is possible to wear the corset with the bot-tom portion and belt niember loose during certain periods of the day and permitting the same to be tightened when the wearer so desires.
By means of the arrangement shown the employment of astenings on the front of the corset are dispensed with and any objectionable projections caused by said fastenings at this point are avoided the corset at the same time presents a much neater and smarter appearance than When the belt members are free at the Jirontl ends and connected by laces or buckles or the like.
I claim:
1. The combination With a corset comprising two sections, each section having fastening means along its front edge and eyelets along the upper portion of its rear edge, of a lap secured vertically its full Width to the outside of the lower portion of each section adjacent the rear edge thereof, said flaps being provided With eyelets along their rear edges, and an abdominal belt member overlying the outside or each section of the corset and free therefrom except adjacent the iaps and along the front edge.
2. rlhe combination With a corset comprisin two sections, each section having fastenin means along its front edge and eyelets along the upper portion of the rear edge, of a flap secured vertically its full Width to the outside of the lower portion of each section adjacent the rear edge thereof, said flaps being provided with eyelets along their rear edges, and an abdominal belt member comprising a plurality of strips overlying the outside of each section of the corset and free therefrom except adjacent the flap and along the front edge, said belt member overlapping the bottom edge of the corset.
ln Witness whereof 1 have subscribed my signature in the presence of tivo Witnesses.
