UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
MOIE GREENWALI), OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DRESS-FORM.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, More GREENWALD, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress- Forms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment forms, which are provided with feet for displaying foot-wear and stockings, and arranged to permit varied adjustment of the feet and of the body of the form.
One of the objects of the invention is to simplify the construction of such devices, to render the various parts more readily adjustable and to increase the stability of the article as a whole.
Other objects and aims of the invention, together with the advantages inherent, will be in part obvious and in part specifically referred to in the course of the ensuing description of the elements, combinations, arrangement of parts, and applications of principles constituting the invention and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which I have illustrated a merely preferred form of embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is an elevation of a device including my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a perspective partly broken away and with a part of the form removed; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the foot supporting plate.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates the body of a garment form which may be of any approved construction, and having outlines conforming to the shape of the upper portion of the human body, there being a recess 2 at the under side of said body portion, the outer end of said recess being in alinement with the sleeve member 3 that is secured to the under side of the form as by means of the flange 4. The sleeve 8 is provided with a thumb screw 5 for a purpose hereafter referred to. From Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 26, 1911.
Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
Serial No. 623,336.
the bottom of the body portion 1 extends a skeleton frame 6 for supporting the lower portion of a garment. A post or rod 7 is adapted to have its upper end extend through the sleeve member 3 and into the recess 2 of the body 1, and to be held in any desired position therein upon manipulation of the thumb screw 5 as will be readily understood. The lower end of the post 7 is detachably engaged in a socket member 8, which is secured to or integral with a supporting plate 9, shown in Fig. 4, said socket member 8 having a thumb screw 10 for engagement with the lower end of the post 7. The plate 9 is adapted to support feet 11, which feet constitute supports for the garment form, the latter being braced in position by means of a brace 12 pivoted at its upper end upon a thumb screw 14 that connects the ends of a clamping collar 15 embracing the post 7, and thumb screw 16 being provided in said clamping collar for fixing the latter in position longitudinally of the post 7 The brace 12 passes through an elongated slot 17 in the plate 9, so that there is no possibility of overturning of the form in case the thumb nut 14 should become loosened, while at the same time the efiicacy of the brace is increased.
In use, an intermediate point in the length of the brace is adapted to engage the outer end of the slot for preventing rotation of said brace about its pivot in one direction, and thereby forming a positive and substantial support. The slot, however, extends inwardly toward the post sufiiciently to permit the brace .to be swung to a position parallel with the post, or nearly so. Thus the brace is readily collapsible so as to be out of the way when the device is not in use.
The plate 11 is additionally provided with slots 18, 19 and 20, slots 19-and 2O intersecting slots 18, at points spaced along the length of said slot 18. This arrangement of intersecting slots is duplicated for each of the feet 11. The foot members 11 are provided with threaded sockets in the ordinary way, into which extend thumb screws 21, washers 22 being interposed between said thumb screws and the plate 9. It will be by the adjustment of the clamp on the post 7, as related to the adjustment of post 7 with respect to the sleeve 8 or S. Accordingly it will be seen that a wide variety of adjustments are possible, that the construction is very simple and that the device is particularly strong and will maintain its position and adjustments under all ordinary conditions of service.
The peculiar arrangement of the intersecting slots 18, 19 and 20 is conducive to a most desirable range of adjustments of the feet, as it permits not only a forward and a rearward adjustment (along slots 18), but also to free lateral adjustment while in either its forward or its rearward position (along slots 20 and 19 respectively). In the display of dresses; the material and the style of the dress may often be most advantageously'displayed by the insertion into the exhibit of a glimpse of the footof the figure, the sight of which gives an added attractiveness and color to the costume. The ideal position for the folds of the garment, however, is often such as to completely obscure the feet of forms as they are commonly constructed. A considerable sidewise movement of one foot or the other, perhaps while forward and perhaps while back, is necessary in order to place the foot in position to be seen beneath the folds of the garment. It is just this sidewise movement which is made possible by the arrangement of the slots shown and described in plate 9. Further, the adjusting of the feet farther apart or closer together, either while both are in their rearward position or both in their forward position, or with one in its'rearward position and the other forward, or while both are in their forward position, almost completely changes the poise of the entire figure. This desirable range of adjustments is readily accomplished through the medium of the slots 18, 19 and 20..
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, itis intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the kind described, a supporting plate having intersecting slots, and a foot having an attaching member ad,- justably held at any point in said slots, the arrangement of said slots being such that said foot may be adjusted forwardly or rearwardly' along one slot and may have free lateral adjustment while in either its forward or its rearward position.
2. In a device of the kind described; a supporting plate having intersecting slots comprising one slot extending forwardly and rearwardly of said supporting plate and a plurality of slots intersecting said first slot at spaced points in the length thereof; 7
and a foot formed with clamping means movable along said slots adapted to be held at any selected point in said slots, the arrangement of said slots being such that said foot may be adjusted forwardly and rearwardly along said first mentioned slot and may have free lateral adjustment while in either its forward or its rearward position along said other slots.
3. In a device of the kind described; a post; a body portion carried by said post; a supporting plate adjustable on said post having intersecting slots formed therein; a foot having an attaching member adjustable to any point in said slots, the arrangement of said slots being such that said foot may be adjusted forwardly or rearwardly along one slot and may have free lateral adjustment while in either its forward or its rearward position; and a brace pivoted to the post by a pivot adjustable longitudinally of said post, and said plate being formed with means engaging said brace intermediate its length for retaining said brace against'pivotal movement.
41-. In a device of the kind described; a body portion having a recess at its under side; means for adjustably holding the post in said recess; a supporting plate pivotally and vertically adjustably mounted on said post having intersecting slots formed therein; a foot having an attaching member adjustable to any point in said slots, the arrangement of said slots being such that said foot may be adjusted forwardly or rearwardly along one slot and may have free lateral adjustment while in either its forward or its rearward position; and a brace pivoted to the post by a pivot adjustable longitudinally of said post, and said plate being formed with a slot through which In testimony whereof I have aflixed my said brace extends, and one end of said slot signature in the presence of two witnesses, 10 being adapted to engage said brace intermediate the length of said brace for retaining MOIE GREENWALD. 5 said brace against pivotal movement in one ,2
direction, but permitting movement of said Witnesses:
brace in an opposite direction whereby said A. S. HONIGSBERG,
brace may be folded toward said post. MORRIS BLAU.
