本發明提供一種介電各向異性顯示負值之液晶組成物及使用其之液晶顯示元件。本發明係關於一種作為光電液晶顯示材料有用之負介電各向異性(△ε)液晶組成物、及使用該液晶組成物之液晶顯示元件,本發明提供一種液晶組成物,其含有一種或兩種以上之通式(I)所表示之化合物,進而含有一種或兩種以上之通式(II)所表示之化合物。藉此,本發明之液晶組成物可減小工作電壓相對於溫度之變化率,因此對改善低溫域下之顯示品質有效。因此,適合在假定於寒冷地區或室外使用之車輛顯示機或移動用途。
Description
本發明係關於一種作為光電液晶顯示材料有用之負介電各向異性(△ε)液晶組成物、及使用該液晶組成物之液晶顯示元件。
使用具有負介電各向異性(負△ε)之液晶組成物之垂直配向型之VA-LCD(Vertical Alignment-Liquid Crystal Display)因可表現出漆黑之黑色,故成為顯示品質優異、對比度高之液晶顯示裝置,並且廣泛滲透於以液晶電視為中心之市場。又,最近除液晶電視等所代表之主動矩陣驅動方式以外,於作為車輛或家電用途之顯示器所用之被動矩陣驅動方式中亦持續增加採用VA-LCD。於車輛用顯示器等中,要求於廣泛之溫度範圍內工作,維持高顯示品質,因此較理想為液晶組成物的工作電壓之溫度相依性儘可能地平坦。
於△ε為正之液晶組成物中,使工作電壓之溫度相依性平坦相對容易,其可藉由改良高溫區域下之工作電壓之溫度相依性而達成。作為改良高溫區域下之工作電壓之溫度相依性之手段,有提高液晶組成物之向列型轉移溫度(TNl)之方法或提高液晶組成物之比電阻值之方法。相對於此,於△ε為負之液晶組成物中,為了使工作電壓之溫度相依性平坦,而必需改良低溫區域下的工作電壓之溫度相依性,但業界未發現有效之手段。
提出有較多液晶化合物及液晶組成物來作為VA-LCD用之液晶材料,但並未提出關於使工作電壓之溫度相依性平坦之液晶化合物的組合。

本發明之目的在於提供一種於負介電各向異性之液晶組成物中具有平坦之工作電壓之溫度相依性的液晶組成物及使用其之液晶顯示元件。
本發明提供一種液晶組成物及使用其液晶顯示元件,該液晶組成物含有一種或兩種以上之通式(I)所表示之化合物,且含有一種或兩種以上之通式(II)所表示之化合物。

本發明之液晶組成物係工作電壓相對於溫度之變化率於25℃~-20℃之範圍內以25℃為基準在±4%以內,且對低溫域下之顯示品質改善
有效者。因此,適合在假定用於寒冷地區或室外之車輛顯示機或移動用途。
以下,對每種成分進行說明。
<通式(I)~(II)所表示之化合物>
一種液晶組成物,其含有一種或兩種以上之通式(I)所表示之化合物,且含有一種或兩種以上之通式(II)所表示之化合物。
式中,R11、R12、R21及R22相互獨立地表示碳原子數1~8之烷基、碳原子數1~8之烷氧基或碳原子數2~8之烯基,該等基相互獨立地未經取代或具有至少一個鹵基作為取代基,而且存在於該等基中之一個或兩個以上之-CH2-可分別獨立地以氧原子未相互直接鍵結之方式由-O-、-S-、-CO-、-COO-、-OCO-、-OCO-O-取代,於本發明中,較佳為相互獨立為碳原子數1~8之烷基或碳原子數1~8之烷氧基,更佳為相互獨立為碳原子數1~5之烷基或碳原子數1~5之烷氧基。又,該等基較佳為未經取代。
A11、A12、A21及A22相互獨立地表示選自由如下(a)~(c)所構成之群中之基:

<通式(III)所表示之化合物>
本發明之液晶組成物可含有一種或兩種以上之通式(III)所表示之化合物。
式中,R31及R32相互獨立地表示碳原子數1~8之烷基、碳原子數1~8之烷氧基或碳原子數2~8之烯基,該等基相互獨立地未經取代或具有至少一個鹵基作為取代基,而且存在於該等基中之一個或兩個以上之-CH2-可分別獨立地以氧原子未相互直接鍵結之方式由-O-、-S-、-CO-、-COO-、-OCO-、-OCO-O-取代,於本發明中,較佳為相互獨立為碳原子數1~8之烷基或碳原子數1~8之烷氧基,更佳為相互獨立為碳原子數1~5之烷基或碳原子數1~5之烷氧基。又,該等基較佳為未經取代。

二基及1,2,3,4-四氫化萘-2,6-二基。
Z31及Z32相互獨立地表示-COO-、-OCO-、-CH2O-、-OCH2-、-CF2O-、-OCF2-、-CH2CH2-、-CH=CH-、-C≡C-、-(CH2)4-、-CH=CH-CH2CH2-、-CH2CH2-CH=CH-或單鍵,於本發明中,較佳為相互獨立地-CH2O-、-OCH2-或單鍵。
<通式(IV)所表示之化合物>
本發明之液晶組成物可含有一種或兩種以上之通式(IV)所表示之化合物。
式中,R41及R42相互獨立地表示碳原子數1~8之烷基、碳原子數1~8之烷氧基或碳原子數2~8之烯基,該等基相互獨立地未經取代或具有至少一個鹵基作為取代基,而且存在於該等基中之一個或兩個以上之-CH2-可分別獨立地以氧原子未相互直接鍵結之方式由-O-、-S-、-CO-、-COO-、-OCO-、-OCO-O-取代,於本發明中,較佳為相互獨立為碳原子數1~8之烷基或碳原子數1~8之烷氧基,更佳為相互獨立為碳原子數1~5之烷基或碳原子數1~5之烷氧基。又,該等基較佳為未經取代。
A41、A42及A43相互獨立地表示選自由如下(a)~(c)所構成之群中之基:(a)反式-1,4-伸環己基(存在於該基中之一個-CH2-或不鄰接之兩個以上之-CH2-可取代成-O-及/或-S-),(b)1,4-伸苯基(存在於該基中之一個-CH2-或不鄰接之兩個以上之-CH2-

A41、A42及A43並不表示2,3-二鹵-1,4-伸苯基,Z41及Z42相互獨立地表示-COO-、-OCO-、-CH2O-、-OCH2-、-CF2O-、-OCF2-、-CH2CH2-、-CH=CH-、-C≡C-、-(CH2)4-、-CH=CH-CH2CH2-、-CH2CH2-CH=CH-或單鍵,於本發明中,Z41及Z42於欲降低黏度之情形時,較佳為分別獨立地單鍵,於欲增大雙折射率之情形時,較佳為分別獨立地-C≡C-。
a41表示0、1或2,於a41表示2之情形時,所存在之兩個A42可相同亦可不同,於a41表示2之情形時,所存在之兩個Z32可相同亦可不同,於本發明中,於欲降低黏度之情形時,較佳為0,於欲提高轉移溫度之情形時,較佳為1或2。
<通式(V)(VI)所表示之化合物>
本發明之液晶組成物可進而含有式V、VI所表示之化合物。
式中,R51及R61相互獨立、與通式(III)中之R31表示相同之意思,R52及R62相互獨立、與通式(III)中之R32表示相同之意思。
A51、A52、A53、A61、A62及A63可相互獨立地表示反式-1,4-伸環己基、1,4-伸苯基或1,4-環己烯基,存在於1,4-伸苯基上之一個或兩個以上之氫原子可相互獨立地由鹵素取代,於本發明中,較佳為相互獨立地反式-1,4-伸環己基、1,4-伸苯基,於欲降低黏度之情形時,較佳為反式-1,4-伸環己基,於欲增大雙折射率之情形時,較佳為1,4-伸苯基。
Z51、Z52、Z61及Z62相互獨立地表示-COO-、-OCO-、-CH2O-、-OCH2-、-CF2O-、-OCF2-、-CH2CH2-、-CH=CH-、-C≡C-、-(CH2)4-、-CH=CH-CH2CH2-、-CH2CH2-CH=CH-或單鍵,於本發明中,較佳為相互獨立地-CH2O-、-OCH2-或單鍵。

<通式(VII)所表示之化合物>
本發明之液晶組成物可含有一種或兩種以上之通式(VII)所表示之化合物作為通式(IV)所表示之化合物。
式中,R71與通式(IV)中之R41表示相同之意思,R72與通式(IV)中之R42表示相同之意思,a71表示0或1,a71於欲降低黏度之情形時,較佳為0,於欲提高轉移溫度之情形時,較佳為1。
本發明之液晶組成物於無損本案發明之效果之限度內,除上述化合物以外,可含有通常之向列型液晶、層列型液晶、膽固醇狀液晶、抗氧化劑、紫外線吸收劑、聚合性單體等。其中,本發明之液晶組成物較佳為未含具有-O-O-、-O-S-及-S-S-等雜原子彼此直接鍵結而成之部分結構的液晶化合物。
本發明之液晶組成物可含有之聚合性單體較佳為光聚合性單體。於含有光聚合性單體之情形時,本發明之液晶組成物之光聚合性單體之含量較佳為500~5000ppm。作為該光聚合性單體,可列舉丙烯酸酯、甲基丙烯酸酯等具有聚合性不飽和雙鍵之單體等。
於將本發明之液晶組成物用於主動矩陣驅動液晶顯示元件中之情形時,本發明之液晶組成物之Tni較佳為60~120℃,作為下限值,更佳為65℃,尤佳為70℃。作為上限值,更佳為110℃,尤佳為105℃。25℃下之△ε較佳為-1.5~-6.0,更佳為-2.0~-5.0,尤佳為-2.0~-3.5。25℃下之△n較佳為0.08~0.13,更佳為0.09~0.12。若進一步詳述,則當對應於較薄之單元間隙時,25℃下之△n較佳為0.10~0.1,當對應於較厚之單元間隙時,較佳為0.08~0.10。20℃下之黏度(η)較佳為10~30mPa.s,更佳為10~25mPa.s,尤佳為10~20mPa.s。
於將本發明之液晶組成物用於被動矩陣驅動液晶顯示元件中之情形時,本發明之液晶組成物之Tni於民生用途中較佳為60~120℃,作為下限值,更佳為65℃,尤佳為70℃。作為上限值,更佳為90℃,尤佳為80℃。於車輛用途等中,作為下限值,更佳為90℃,尤佳為100℃。作為上限值,更佳為115℃,尤佳為105℃。25℃下之△n於低duty驅動用中較佳為0.08~0.13,尤佳為0.08~0.11。又,於高duty驅動用中較佳為0.13~0.20,尤佳為0.15~0.18。25℃下之△ε於低duty驅動中較佳為-2.0~-7.0,尤佳為-2.5~-5.5。20℃下之η較佳為10~40mPa.s,更佳為10~30mPa.s,尤佳為10~25mPa.s。
本發明之液晶組成物之Tni、△ε、及△n分別藉由調整以第一成分及第二成分為首之各種化合物組成比,可適當地調整為適於該液晶組成物之使用用途等之範圍。作為本發明之液晶組成物,Tni為70℃~120℃,25℃、1KHz下之△ε為-1.5~-8.0,25℃、589nm下之△n較佳為0.080~0.250。藉由使Tni、△ε、及△n在該等範圍內,可較佳地用於各種
用途。
又,藉由使用本發明之液晶組成物,可製造具有垂直配向能力之液晶顯示元件。例如,藉由使用本發明之液晶組成物,可製造預傾角(pre-tilt)為80°~90°之液晶顯示元件。
[實施例]
以下,列舉實施例等進一步詳述本發明,但本發明並不限定於該等實施例等。又,以下之實施例及比較例之組成物中之「%」意指『質量%』。

製造由表1中記載之組成所構成之液晶組成物,比較該液晶組成物的工作電壓之溫度相依性。
比較例1-20℃下之工作電壓(Vth)以25℃為基準為93%。相對於此,關於實施例1、2,-20℃之工作電壓以25℃為基準為97~100%,能看到溫度相依性之改善。
[產業上之可利用性]
本發明之液晶組成物對液晶顯示元件有用,對主動矩陣驅動用液晶顯示元件及被動矩陣驅動用液晶顯示元件有用,尤其是對被動矩陣驅動用液晶顯示元件有用。又,可用於VA模式、PSVA(Polymer Stabilized Vertical Alignment,高分子穩定垂直配向)模式、IPS(In plane switching,共平面切換)模式或ECB(Electrically Controlled Birefringence,電控雙折射)模式用液晶顯示元件。

(式中,R41及R42相互獨立地表示碳原子數1~8之烷基、碳原子數1~8之烷氧基或碳原子數2~8之烯基,該等基相互獨立地未經取代或具有至少一個鹵基作為取代基,而且存在於該等基中之一個或兩個以上之-CH2-可分別獨立地以氧原子未相互直接鍵結之方式由-O-、-S-、-CO-、-COO-、-OCO-、-OCO-O-取代;A41、A42及A43相互獨立地表示選自由如下(a)~(c)所構成之群中之基:(a)反式-1,4-伸環己基(存在於該基中之一個-CH2-或不鄰接之兩個以上之-CH2-可取代成-O-及/或-S-),(b)1,4-伸苯基(存在於該基中之一個-CH2-或不鄰接之兩個以上之-CH2-基可取代成-N-),(c)1,4-環己烯基、1,4-雙環(2.2.2)伸辛基、哌啶-1,4-二基、萘-2,6-二基、 十氫化萘-2,6-二基及1,2,3,4-四氫化萘-2,6-二基;上述基(a)、基(b)及基(c)上之氫原子可相互獨立地由碳原子數1~3之烷基、碳原子數2~3之烯基、碳原子數1~3之烷氧基、碳原子數1~3之烯氧基、CN或鹵素取代,A41、A42及A43並不表示2,3-二鹵-1,4-伸苯基;Z41及Z42相互獨立地表示-COO-、-OCO-、-CH2O-、-OCH2-、-CF2O-、-OCF2-、-CH2CH2-、-CH=CH-、-C≡C-、-(CH2)4-、-CH=CH-CH2CH2-、-CH2CH2-CH=CH-或單鍵;a41表示0、1或2,於a41表示2之情形時,所存在之兩個A42可相同亦可不同,於a41表示2之情形時,所存在之兩個Z32可相同亦可不同)。 - 如申請專利範圍第2項之液晶組成物,其含有一種或兩種以上之選自由通式(V)所表示之化合物及通式(VI)所構成之群中的化合物作為通式(III)所表示之化合物,
(式中,R51及R61相互獨立並與申請專利範圍第2項中所述之R31表示相同之意思,R52及R62相互獨立並與申請專利範圍第2項中所述之R32表示相同之意思;A51、A52、A53、A61、A62及A63相互獨立地表示反式-1,4-伸環己基、1,4- 伸苯基或1,4-環己烯基,存在於1,4-伸苯基上之一個或兩個以上之氫原子可相互獨立地由鹵素取代;Z51、Z52、Z61及Z62相互獨立地表示-COO-、-OCO-、-CH2O-、-OCH2-、-CF2O-、-OCF2-、-CH2CH2-、-CH=CH-、-C≡C-、-(CH2)4-、-CH=CH-CH2CH2-、-CH2CH2-CH=CH-或單鍵;a51、a52、a61及a62相互獨立地表示0、1或2,a51+a52表示0、1或2,a61+a62表示0、1或2,於a51表示2之情形時,所存在之兩個A51可相同亦可不同,於a52表示2之情形時,所存在之兩個A52可相同亦可不同,於a51表示2之情形時,所存在之兩個Z51可相同亦可不同,於a52表示2之情形時,所存在之兩個Z52可相同亦可不同,於a61表示2之情形時,所存在之兩個A61可相同亦可不同,於a62表示2之情形時,所存在之兩個A62可相同亦可不同,於a61表示2之情形時,所存在之兩個Z61可相同亦可不同,於a62表示2之情形時,所存在之兩個Z62可相同亦可不同)。 - 如申請專利範圍第3項之液晶組成物,其含有一種或兩種以上之通式(VII)所表示之化合物作為通式(IV)所表示之化合物,
(式中,R71與申請專利範圍第3項中所述之R41表示相同之意思,R72與申請專利範圍第3項中所述之R42表示相同之意思,a71表示0或1)。 - 如申請專利範圍第2項之液晶組成物,其中通式(I)所表示之化合物、通式(II)所表示之化合物及通式(III)所表示之化合物之總量為液晶組成物整體之50質量%至100質量%。
- 如申請專利範圍第1或2項之液晶組成物,其向列型-均向性轉移溫度為70℃~120℃,介電各向異性為-1.5~-8.0及雙折射率為0.080~0.250。
- 如申請專利範圍第1或2項之液晶組成物,其含有500~5000ppm之單體。
- 一種液晶顯示元件,其使用申請專利範圍第1至8項中任一項之液晶組成物。
- 如申請專利範圍第9項之液晶顯示元件,其預傾角為80°~90°。
- 如申請專利範圍第9或10項之液晶顯示元件,其為主動矩陣驅動型。
- 如申請專利範圍第9或10項之液晶顯示元件,其為被動矩陣驅動型
