Abstract

1396155 Removing oil from liquids SEACLEAN SA 2 June 1972 [4 June 1971] 25990/ 72 Heading B1D An oil layer 20 is removed from a water layer 19 by first increasing the depth of the oil layer 60 in relation to the water layer 59 by decreasing the surface area of the mixture. This may be achieved using a screw 47 of varying pitch arranged in a substantially horizontal position in the liquid mixture contained in the trough 51. Rotation of the screw forces the liquid from inlet 61 through a series of cells 52 of decreasing size and the oil layer which collects in recovery chamber 57 can be removed by means not shown, for example a pump. The shape of the bottom 53 of the trough and the positioning of the fixed walls 49 facilitates the flow of purified water into discharge channel 55. An alternative means of decreasing surface area is illustrated in relation to Fig. 11 (not shown) where a series of moveable walls are driven at variable speed in a closed loop. The treatment of oil on the sea by means of devices mounted on ships is described as well as fixed industrial and municipal installations. [GB1396155A]
