Abstract

1348042 Mixing and discharging slurries MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [24 Aug 1970] 24355/71 Heading B1C In apparatus for forming a slurry to discharge solid material 5 from a tank 1 the latter has a sump 2 and a rotating water jet 4 the angle to the vertical of which is adjustable. High pressure water is supplied by the pump 30 to the jet, and low pressure water by the pump 37 to an inlet 6 and inlet apertures 42 of the sump, and to a jet 43 in the sump which assists discharge thereof into a pipeline 7. Discharge of the tank is begun with the jet 1 vertical and it is gradually lowered in dependence on the height of sensors 45, 50 which successively contact the exposed face and control the speed of the motor 28 which rotates the jet, and a hydraulic cylinder 24 which adjusts the jet angle #, which is maintained at 5‹ to 20‹ less than the face angle °. The sum of low and high pressure water flows is maintained constant but if increased slurry concentration is detected by the sensor 55 the proportion of high pressure water is decreased to reduce the amount of solid removed, and vice versa. If the slurry surface in the sump rises above a predetermined level the detector 58 shuts off the high pressure flow by closing the valve 33, the low pressure flow being thus increased to clear the obstruction.
