981,977. Outboard drives; hydrofoil vessels. F. P. ELLZEY. May 31, 1963, No. 21950/63. Headings B7A and B7V. A vessel having an inboard engine has a propulsion unit which comprises a frame A attached to the vessel, a drive-shaft D carried by said frame, spindle means C carried by the frame on a transverse axis, an arm B pivoted on the spindle and supporting a propeller assembly P, a driven shaft F carried by arm B to operate the propeller assembly and an intermediate shaft H rotatable on spindle means C and presenting one gear 62 of one pair of gears 61, 62 driven by drive-shaft D and one gear 63 of another pair of gears driving shaft F. As shown, the transmission from drive-shaft D to shaft F (Fig. 4) comprises two pairs of gears 61, 62 and 63, 64. Gears 62, 63 are attached to hollow shaft H which rotates on spindle 45 of spindle means C. The propeller assembly may be raised or lowered by applying pressure fluid to either side of a piston 121 attached to an outer telescopic element 75 via outlets K1 and K2 (Fig. 3), said element 75 supporting the propeller assembly. The propeller assembly is turned for steering by means of. linkage which includes cable 90 attached to an outer drum 122 which in turn is connected to element 75 by linkage 125. When the cable is pulled in one direction, drum 122 and element 75 turn together. The propeller assembly may be raised in a longitudinal plane to an out-of-use position where it may be locked in said position (Fig. 1, not shown). The housing 80 (Fig. 5) of the propeller assembly has fitted to it a hydrofoil 110 which is pivotable about a transverse axis ,by means of worm gearing 114. The hull of the vessel also has hydrofoils (Figs. 1 arid 2, not shown) which are adjustable between a work position and a raised position.
