In a gas lighter in which the supply of gas to a burner tube 7 is controlled by squeezing a wick 21 wound round a resilient core 22, by means of a conical member 14, a film plug 25 is disposed in a gas outlet duct 24 in the member 14, the run of the plug fibres extending transversely to the run of the wick fibres in the squeezing zone. The wick 21 extends to the lighter fuel chamber through an aperture in the burner housing 1, which has a second aperture 31. The conical member 14 may be separate or integral with a hollow shaft 4 which is screwed into the burner housing 1 by means of a milled wheel 5. The fibre plug 25 has a length greater than its diameter and extends from just below a seat 26<SP>1</SP> associated with a valve head 13 on the end of the burner tube 7, to a conical surface 14<SP>1</SP> of the member 14. A passage 28 of smaller diameter than the duct 24 may be provided either in the conical member 14 or in apot-shaped element 29 pressed on to the member 14, to communicate the plug 25 with the wick 21. The latter is received in lateral longitudinal grooves in the core 22 and is contained in a holder 17 which seats on a shoulder of the burner housing 1 and which is retained by a spring 19 bearing on the conical member 14. The valve head 13 is lined with a resilient material and is urged off the seat 26<SP>1</SP> by a spring 11 when an extinguishing cap on the lighter is lifted. The burner tube 7 is slidably mounted in the bore 6 of the shaft 4 and has a gas duct 7<SP>1</SP>. In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the burner tube 7 and valve head 13 are separate items, having a spring therebetween of such free length that when the extinguishing cap is lifted, the valve head 13 is free to be lifted by the gas pressure of the fuel.
