Abstract

977,063. Apparatus for coating webs. MEAD CORPORATION. Aug. 17, 1961 [Aug. 19, 1960], No. 29718/61. Heading D1L. The apparatus described in Specification 838,180, for coating paper, is modified by including two metering rolls (32 and 33) arranged side by side and rotating in opposite directions, an applicator roll (31) in contact with and rotating in the same direction as one of the metering rolls, means for moving a paper web (11) in a direction opposite from the direction of rotation of the applicator roll. This arrangement allows the amount of coating supplied to the web to be accurately controlled. Preferably, the metering rolls have resilient surfaces, e.g. of rubber, and the applicator roll has a hard abrasion-resistant surface, e.g. of brass or chromium. A smooting device 35 such as a flexible distributer or a spread shaft may be fitted to contact lightly the surface of roll 31 and smooth the coating.
