Abstract

1,060,021. Web coating apparatus. KOPPERS CO. Lnc. June 23, 1965 [July 28, 1964], No. 26672/65. Heading D1L. A doctor roller for use in an adhesive applicator has a peripheral surface which consists of a plurality of pockets that are defined and separated from one another by two intersecting sets of parallel protruberances embossed on said surface. In the arrangement shown coating roller 42 having a peripheral covering or surface of elastomeric material picks up adhesive from reservoir 54 and carries it into the nip between roller 42 and a doctor roller 48 having a rigid embossed surface. The roller 48 is adjustable towards and away from roller 42 by eccentric 52 and depending on the degree of adjustment so a greater or lesser amount of adhesive remains on the surface of roller 42. This adhesive flows to form a continuous thin layer on the surface of roller 42 and is applied to the crowns 60 of a corrugated sheet 24 against a spring loaded rider roller 62. A liner sheet 36 is then brought into contact with the crowns 60 and adheres thereto. In a second embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) an auxiliary coating roller is introduced between the roller (42) and the web to be coated and Fig. 5 (not shown), illustrates the manufacture of double faced corrugated paperboard.
