Abstract
976,944. Electric incandescent lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 19, 1962 [June 22, 1961], No. 23557/62. Heading H1F. An incandescent electric lamp comprises an incandescent element of high melting point metal carbide e.g. tantalum, hafnium, zirconium or niobium carbide, or a mixture of metal carbides, a gas filling of inert gas, a hydrocarbon and not more than about 5% by volume of hydrogen, a catalyst for the formation of hydrocarbon from carbon and hydrogen being also present. The meandering element may be in the form of a U-shaped strip 3 connected at its ends to caps 8 mounted on stem tubes 6 enclosing the lead-in wires 4. The catalyst may be iron, nickel or cobalt or alloys thereof and may be applied to the strip 3 or to a filament connected between one of the stem tubes 6 and a disc 1 supporting but insulated from these, and is evaporated on to the interior of the glass wall 2 of the bulb by heating the strip 3 or the filament by passing an electric current through it. The bulb is subsequently filled with inert gas and a mixture of hydrogen and methane or ethylene.
