Abstract
<PICT:0974950/C1/1> SO2 and Fe2O3 are produced by heating FeSO4.H2O in a multi-shelved oven to at least the decomposition temperature thereof with a combustion gas in a reducing atmosphere wherein the combustion gas is derived from the burning of sulphur or a fuel containing elementary sulphur or mixtures thereof. In a specific embodiment, the Figure, ferrous sulphate monohydrate is fed into furnace 1 by hopper 2 at charge device 3. The sulphate falls downwards through the furnace on the shelves which rotate about the central shaft whilst hot combustion gases which are generated at 6 by feeding molten sulphur in at 10 and air at 7, rise upward through the furnace. The iron oxide leaves at 4 while outlet 5 removes the SO2-containing gas. Molten sulphur is continuously charged to the furnace at 8. The furnace may be heated in the range 800 DEG to 1200 DEG C. but preferably not above 1000 DEG C. In the higher shelves of the oven, the sulphate is first dehydrated. The gas leaving the furnace may be converted to H2SO4, e.g. by the contact process and also contains 28-30% SO2. Specification 956,049 is referred to.
