Abstract

In a process of making smokeless briquettes similar to that described in Specification 1,002,654, the pre-oxidizing step and the thermal oxidation step are performed simultaneously in a turbulent carrier bed, e.g. of sand, in a chamber, while causing the coal to be in turbulent state about the briquettes by feeding the necessary oxygen through the bed in the form of a mixture of air and flue gas. The coal in the form of slack, and the briquettes, are fed to and withdrawn from the chamber continuously. The sand bed should be maintained at 200 DEG to 400 DEG C., preferably 240 DEG to 360 DEG C., and the treatment time is 1 to 6 hours depending on the temperature. The chamber may have a fixed or movable porous floor, and the sand bed is made turbulent by a rising current of hot gas, as e.g. in a conventional sand bed furnace.
