Abstract

A process for the reduction of iron oxide to molten iron comprises contacting the iron oxide and fluxing material with an upwardly flowing stream of reducing gas comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen containing not more than 8% steam and 4% carbon dioxide generated in a separate chamber by reaction of a solid fuel and an oxidizing gas and less than 20% steam based on the weight of fuel at a temperature of 2000-3000 DEG F. and introducing the reducing gas at the reaction temperature directly into the reducing zone. The oxide may be mixed with coke and limestone and charged into the top of a shaft furnace and the reducing gas, which may be at a pressure 100 p.s.i. higher than the pressure in the reduction zone, added at a point above a supply of oxygen containing gas. Some of the gas rising in the shaft may be drawn off near the top of the charge, desulphurized by calcium oxide and returned to the gas forming chamber. Specification 683,318 is referred to.
