Abstract

968,898. Disc brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Nov. 8, 1962 [Nov. 15, 1961], No. 40894/61. Heading F2E. In a disc brake of the kind in which fluid pressure means is associated, with a movable member for applying a pad or pads to one side of a disc directly and a pad or pads to the other side of the disc by reaction force acting through the member, the fluid pressure means comprises a fixed cylinder having two pistons urged in opposite directions by the admission of pressure fluid to the cylinder, one piston acting directly on one pad and the other acting on a U-shaped member slidable on a U-shaped support and straddling the disc so that it applies the other pad. As shown, the U-shaped member 5 is slidable on a support 1 composed of a generally U-shaped structure providing a slide surface for the member 5, a cylindrical part 2 providing a pressure chamber 12 between pistons 3, 4, and upwardly extending limbs 15 which engage the longitudinal edges of member 5 to guide the latter. Springs 19 are pressed against the upper surface of member 5 by removable pins 20 fitted between the limbs 15, whereby member 5 and the friction pads 13, 14 can be removed. On admission of pressure fluid to chamber 12 pistons 3 and 4 move apart, the former applying pad 13 to one side of the disc 9 and the latter acting through member 5 to apply pad 14 to the other side of the disc. Support 1 is secured to an axle structure 8 associated with a hub and wheel assembly 10, 11 to which the disc 9 is bolted.
