Abstract

1,050,623. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Oct. 22, 1963 [Oct. 25, 1962], No. 40346/62. Heading F2E. In a disc brake having a friction element 14 which is guided to move obliquely relative to the disc 10 so as to provide a self-energizing effect, a rigid thrust member 23 applies a thrust in the axial direction of the disc and is displaceable in a direction parallel to the plane of the disc; Means 15 are provided to apply braking pressure to the element 14 through the member 23 and resilient means 25 are provided for restoring the thrust member to its original disposition on release of the braking pressure, the thrust member being free to slide laterally relative to the friction element. As shown, the pad 20 is applied against the disc 10 by a piston cylinder device, the rod 23 being received in a recess of the piston 17 and surrounded by a rubber sleeve 25. A pad on the opposite side of the disc may be applied by a similar piston cylinder device in a fixed caliper or may be applied by the reaction of a movable caliper. In modifications a rod or sphere may abut a boss formed on the piston, a rubber sleeve surrounding both the rod or sphere and the boss. The rubber sleeve may be replaced by a slotted sleeve or springy metal. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the thrust member 60 in the form of a spindle 61 integral with a grooved pulley 62 is returned to its original position by an annular spring member 66. In a further embodiment the thrust member is formed integral with the piston which is provided with a pair of axially spaced resilient sealing rings which restore the piston-thrust member combination to its original position.
