Abstract
Diolefines present in a normally liquid hydrocarbon mixture, for example dispolene, containing diolefines, mono-olefines and aromatics and boiling in the range 100-400 DEG F., are hydrogenated by contacting the mixture together with hydrogen with a palladium-alumina catalyst at a temperature not exceeding 210 DEG F., the hydrocarbon mixture being at least 90% wt. in the liquid phase while in contact with the catalyst. The alumina may be activated or gamma alumina. Preferred conditions are 0-2000 p.s.i.g., 0.1-10 L.H.S.V. The thus hydrogenated mixture may thereafter be contacted in the vapour phase together with hydrogen with a cobalt molybdate-alumina catalyst, preferably at 550-950 DEG F., 200-2000 p.s.i.g., 0.1-10 L.H.S.V., or with a tungsten-nickel sulphide, nickel-alumina, platinum-alumina, or palladium-alumina catalyst to hydrogenate the mono-olefines without substantial hydrogenation of the aromatics. Specification 624,353 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,325,033, 2,799,627, 2,898,308 and 2,953,612 are referred to.
