Abstract

1361671 Steam cracking a hydrogenated feedstock BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 9 Dec 1971 [6 Jan 1971 14 Sept 1971] 605/71 and 42765/71 Heading C5E Olefins are produced by a two-step process comprising catalytically hydrogenating a petroleum distillate feedstock to at least partially saturate aromatic hydrocarbons therein and then, directly, thermally cracking the resulting hydrogenated product in the presence of steam. The feed may be a vacuum distillate of boiling range 300-650‹ C. at atmospheric pressure or a gas oil boiling at 200-350‹ C. The hydrogenation may be carried out at 50-500‹ C., 50-5000 p.s.i.g., in one or more stages using as catalyst a combination of Ni and/or Co and W and/or Mo, optionally sulphided on an Al 2 O 3 or SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 support. The resulting hydrogenated product may be vaporized and passed with steam in a ratio of 1 : 2 to 2 : 1 through a heated tube at 700-1000‹ C. for a residence time of 0À01-5 seconds.
