Abstract

951,867. Laminating. HERCULES POWDER CO. Aug. 2, 1962 [Aug. 8, 1961], No. 29816/62. Heading B5N. In a method of coating a film of oriented stereoregular polypropylene with a film of a thermoplastic material, a web 2 of the polypropylene, is drawn from a roll 1 and coated with molten thermoplastic material 8 by an extruder 7. Substantially immediately after the coating operation, i.e. within one second, the laminate 9 thus formed is cooled by rolls 5, 6, or other suitable cooling means, so that the orientation of the polypropylene film is not lost. A further web of a thermoplastics material or paper, or a metal foil, may be applied to the laminate 9 before it is cooled by the rolls. Suitable thermoplastic coating materials which may be used are low or high density polyethylene, polyvinylacetate, polyvinylchloride, polyvinylidene chloride, copolymers of vinylidene chloride with e.g. acrylonitrile, and even stereoregular polypropylene itself.
