Abstract

A method for the production of a flexible low density cellular plastics material comprises feeding a polymer and a blowing agent into an extrusion machine, activating the blowing agent and forming the foamed extrudate on or around a flexible tape. Alternatively, the blowing agent may be activated after the extrudate is formed on or around the tape. The polymer may be polyvinylchloride and the tape may be aluminium foil or metallised polyethylene terephthalate film, or the latter laminated with polyvinyl chloride sheet. A low density is specified as being in the range of 5 to 15 lb./cu. ft. The method may also comprise feeding the foamed extrudate into a second extrusion machine and forming an outer plastics covering, e.g. of polyvinyl chloride, around the foamed extrudate.
