A method of applying a liquid coating to a moving web comprises applying to one side of a continuous web a layer of a coating liquid, causing the web so coated to pass through a narrow gap between two juxtaposed surfaces one of which is a fixed surface of low friction characteristics contacting the uncoated side of the web or is a roller rotating with its peripheral surface travelling in the direction of the web and having a resilient surface contacting the uncoated side of the web, and the other is a roller having a smooth polished surface and rotating with its peripheral surface travelling in a direction opposite to the web, and applying coating liquid to said smooth surfaced roller whereby the liquid is transferred by said roller to the side of the web already bearing a liquid coating. As shown web 4 passes around the rubber surface 2 of roller 1 and passes through the gap between roller 1 and a smooth polished metal roller 3 in juxtaposition thereto, the rollers rotating in the direction indicated by the arrows. Coating liquid 9 is applied to web 4 from trough 5 so that the web carries a liquid coating as it passes through the gap between the rollers. Further coating liquid 9 is applied from trough 6 to roller 3, the quantity being metered by blade 7. A second coating liquid 10 is applied, e.g. from a slot applicator 8 and the thus superposed liquid layers are carried round by roller 3 and are transferred to the web 4, thus applying to the web a double coating 9,10. Successive or superimposed coatings from successive coating stations may be applied to the smooth surfaced roller.
