Abstract

A composition for making refractory moulds (see Division B3) and articles, e.g. crucibles, comprises a slurry of a particulate refractory material, e.g. silica or sillimanite, and, as binder therefore, an organopolysilicate obtained by transesterification of an isopropylpolysilicate, which may contain some orthosilicate, with one or more aminoalcohols (see Division C3). The binder is set by means of water, which may be added to the composition prior to shaping, or taken up from the atmosphere after shaping. Examples are given. Specifications 907,773 and 948,132 are referred to.ALSO:A homogeneous liquid silicate is made by subjecting isopropyl polysilicate, with or without isopropyl orthosilicate, to an ester interchange reaction with a reagent consisting of (1) one or more aminoalcohols of the formula: <FORM:0948134/C3/1> wherein R1 and R2 are each H or CH3, m is O or 1, R3 is CH3 when m is O and H when m is 1, or (2) one or more of the above aminoalcohols with monoethanolamine and/or monoisopropanolamine, in which mixture the total content of alcohols of the above formula is at least 0.25 mol per mol of the aminoalcohol reagent. In examples (1) an isopropyl polysilicate containing 5.4% (wt.) of the orthosilicate was refluxed with 2-amino-2-methyl-propan-1-ol, the isopropanol formed being distilled off, to yield a polysilicate containing 0.2 aminoalkyl groups per Si atom; an isopropylsilicate mixture was similarly reacted with (2, 19) 2-amino-butan-1-ol, (3) 2-amino-propan-1-ol, (4, 20) dimethyl-amino-2-methyl-propan-1-ol, (5, 8, 10) 2-methyl-2-amino-propan-1-ol, and (9, 11, 21, 22) a mixture of 2-amino-2-methyl-propan-1-ol and monoethanolamine or (14, 15, 16, 18) monoisopropanolamine (for comparative purposes). Uses: the silicates are mixed with refractories for making crucibles and shell moulds (see Division B3 and C1). Specifications 907,773 and 948,132 are referred to.
