Abstract
A composition comprises (a) a particulate refractory material, (b) a water-containing binding agent, and (c) a water-insoluble fatty or waxy substance comprising in its molecule a hydrocarbon residue of 12-22 C atoms and an hydrophilic group. It may also include (d) further ingredients which react together exothermically. The liquid content of the composition is substantially entirely water. Refractory (a) may be e.g. sand fire-brick, chamotte, sillimanite or alumina. Binding-agent (b) may be e.g. a wet clay, an aqueous alkali-metal silicate, e.g. sodium silicate, or an aqueous dispersion or solution of a natural or synthetic gum or resin. Substance (c), which may be present in a proportion of 0.05-2.0% by weight, may be a fatty alcohol, e.g. cetyl, lauryl, myristyl or stearyl alcohol, or the corresponding esters or amides. Ingredients (d) may include, e.g. finely-divided Al and oxidizing agent therefor. The composition may be used to form moulds and cores for foundry use. If (b) is a silicate, a treatment by CO2 or other gas may be used to harden the composition.
