Abstract

1339483 Refractory liners M MIKI 25 July 1971 [7 Sept 1970 (2)] 35197/71 Heading C3N [Also in Division B5] Refractory liners, e.g. in the form of sleeves, sheets or slabs, for use in metal casting, are formed from a mixture comprising by weight from 10 to 50% of granular refractory material; 15 to 60% of inorganic fibrous material; 5 to 30% organic fibrous material; from 5 to 10% of a water insoluble binding agent, these ingredients being agitated and mixed in the dry state in a cotton-opener and the mixture then being kneaded into a dough with less than 1¢ times its own weight of water, compressed in a mould and dried at a temperature sufficient to melt the binding agent to solidify the mixture. The refractory material may be e.g. silica, alumina, chamot, brick powder or fly ash and exothermic materials such as aluminium and its oxidizing agent may be included; the size of the granules being between 0À2 and 1 mm. Suitable inorganic fibres are rock wool, glass wool, slag wool, and asbestos having a length between about 3 and 5 mm, whilst the organic fibres may be of wood chips, wood pulp, or paper from about 0À5 to 5 mm in length. A synthetic resin such as a phenol resin is used as the binding agent.
