Abstract

946,114. Reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. June 9, 1961 [June 15, 1960], No. 21016/60. Heading G6C. [Also in Division F2] Pressure tubes 50 of a reactor are made of a material of low neutron absorption and are connected to headers by mild or stainless steel end tubes 3; the tubes are joined by inserting the end of one tube, preferably the pressure tube, in an annular pocket in the other tube, so that both inner and outer surfaces of the one tube are in contact with the other tube, and locking the tubes together. The pocket may be formed, as shown in Fig. 2, by welding a steel collar 4 to the end tube 3, and grooves are provided into which the tubes can be deformed to lock them. Fig. 8 shows the tubes after assembly but before locking and welding. A tube expander 40 is used to expand the tubes into the grooves. The tubes 3 are connected to headers by side passages and are sealed at the ends by caps. Tubes 50 may be of Zr, Al, Mg, Be or alloys of these metals. Specification 686,656 is referred to.
